Dan Lanning notched his first victory as Oregon’s coach Monday by retaining one of the Ducks’ most talented young players.

Around 6 p.m. Monday evening, Oregon freshman running back Seven McGee announced he was entering the transfer portal. It seemed as though the door had closed on the former 4-star signees’ time in Eugene.

Less than two hours later, he reversed that decision and announced that he had decided to not enter the transfer portal.

So what changed during that time? Well, it sounds as though Lanning might have played a large part in convincing McGee to stay with the Ducks.

McGee is Oregon’s starting punt returner and saw a sharp increase in playing time late in the season at slot receiver. He is listed as both a receiver and running on Oregon’s most recent two-deep.

Lanning will not hit the recruiting trail for the Ducks for a few weeks, but by retaining McGee, Oregon’s newly-hired head coach landed a major recruiting victory during his first official day on the job.
