Terrance Ferguson Previews Rose Bowl
Oregon Ducks tight end Terrance Ferguson spoke with media Saturday to preview the team’s upcoming matchup with the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl and College Football Playoff quarterfinal. Below are the most notable questions and quotes from Ferguson’s interview as well as my thoughts at the end.
On what he remembers from Oregon and Ohio State’s first game:
“We’ve been motivated every game and for us it’s been winning each week and that starts with preparation. We do a great job with a nameless, faceless opponent and we just go out there and play to our standard.”
“Each week we’ve gotten better so there’s a lot we can improve on and focus on.”
On where the Ducks have improved since October:
“Across the board, our offensive line and front in general is communicating better and we’re getting comfortable with each other. You go watch the games and there are just little things we missed and I think we’ve done a great job seeing that and nipping it in the bud.”
On being excited to get back after a long layoff:
“We’ve been hitting each other for a long time and we had that bye which was nice but we’re ready to show what we can do.”
On what’s different about this year compared to coach Dan Lanning‘s first two:
“When everyone got here you pull a lot of guys in from different places and everyone came with a common goal to win. There was no individual seeking and a lot of guys bought into our DNA traits.”
“We’re super connected and we compete every time we’re on the field. We’ve been tough and found ways to win when we shouldn’t have.”
On tight end Kenyon Sadiq‘s expanded role:
“Kenyon’s a special player and he’s always had a role but he’s found bigger spots and he’s just a tremendous athlete. He’s a mismatch so just having another guy who can run like that is hard to cover.”

On what he sees in Ohio State’s safety tandem and how to attack them:
“Those guys are really good players and hard to exploit. Our coaches do a great job creating misdirection and putting people in the right places at the right time and I’m an alright athlete so I can do something every once in a while.”
On building a relationship with quarterback Dillon Gabriel:
“As soon as I knew he would be the quarterback I said we’d be best friends no matter what. Luckily enough he’s a good person off the field so any time he wanted to throw the ball, I was there.”
Linden’s Take:
Ferguson is a super solid guy who always has the right answers in interviews. With how much Oregon was able to attack Ohio State’s defensive perimeter in the first matchup I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them lean into the tight ends this time around to compensate for the Buckeyes adjusting.
Having a strong tight end rotation has done wonders for the Ducks’ offense this year and they’ll need another good showing from the group Wednesday.
