With another practice in the books, Oregon Football defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi weighed in on what he saw from the Ducks Thursday.

Below are his most notable quotes:

On new experience in the defensive back room:

“I think these guys have done a great job and it’s very different than it was a long time ago. We’re afforded a lot of time with these guys now. It’s not like the old days where you show up to camp and you’re just starting the first beginning principles of your system.”

On expectations for transfer defensive tackle Derrick Harmon:

“We have high expectations, he has high expectations of himself. He’s a guy that’s here to take his game to the next level. We’re gonna do everything humanly possible to assist him in that.”

On what he hopes to see from Oregon’s edge rushers:

“We had three true freshman make major contributions last season as well as Jordan Burch and a couple of others.”

“No one here on this defense has arrived. We’re not talking about the accomplishments of last season, it’s about moving forward.”

On what he’s seen from linebacker Devon Jackson over the summer:

“He had a huge stride and I mentioned that he would be competing to be the most improved on our defense amongst a couple of other guys.”

“One of the things he’s gotten much better at is his communication. That’s essential in our defense. Any guy who can run 23 mph, if you can organize that type of speed, you can be a critical piece to our defense.”

On what he hopes Oregon’s defense improves on throughout camp:

“I think we gotta go back off of last year’s assessment. Something we have to get better at is red zone defense so we did a lot of things this offseason, looking at possibly different schematics and taking what we do and doing it better. We want to be winning at a much higher percentage on third down as well.”

On what he hopes the Ducks’ defensive identity becomes:

“We want to be a relentless defense. Attacking the ball and playing for something much bigger than just yourself, that’s what we want to accomplish out there.”
