Oregon head coach Dan Lanning met with reporters on Wednesday in the midst of arguably the most successful National Signing Day in program history.

In a matter of hours, the Ducks surged from No. 14 in the On3 Consensus team rankings to No. 8 thanks to a flurry of 4- and 5-star commitments Wednesday morning.

It was an impressive haul for Lanning and his staff, which rebounded quickly following the de-commitment of 5-star quarterback Dante Moore earlier this week.

In the span of 10 minutes on Wednesday, the Ducks flipped 5-star safety Peyton Bowen and landed a commitment from 5-star EDGE Matayo Uiagelelei.

Those two commitments were bookended by flips of Baylor 4-star quarterback commit Austin Novosad and LSU defensive back commit Daylen Austin.

“One thing I think that we’ll spend a lot of time on is we’re never going to trick someone into coming to Oregon,” Lanning said on Wednesday. “We want someone to pick Oregon because it’s the right fit for them in their heart; it’s the right place they can grow and they can get better.

“And same for us. I think when there’s a sales pitch that doesn’t fit, you realize that you’re going to lose people in your program. One thing that I’m proud of right now is that we don’t have a single freshman in the transfer portal right now.

“What’s that mean? It means what we said last year is reality.”

+ The On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking is the only ranking that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies: On3, 247Sports, Rivals.com and ESPN.

+ The On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking is the only ranking that equally weights the four major media companies at 25%. Other industry composite ratings disproportionately weight their own rating.

+ The On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking solves the problem of varying class sizes during the recruiting cycle. It compiles the highest-rated commits for each team up to a total based on a rolling average of current total commitments among Power 5 schools.

With this model, there are no bonus points for having more commitments than other teams and only small deductions occur when a team has fewer commitments than the rolling average. Unlike distribution (bell) curves, this model doesn’t disproportionately weight a team’s top three or four highest rated commits and is a more accurate representation of an entire class.
