Dan Lanning’s Oregon football program entered Wednesday with no shortage of buzz. The Ducks were in the mix for two of the top uncommitted players in the 2023 class on the eve of National Signing Day.

Ultimately, Oregon went 1-for-2 Wednesday morning and landed a commitment from 4-star cornerback Rodrick Pleasant, who chose the Ducks over USC, UCLA, and countless others.

With the addition of Pleasant, Oregon’s 2023 class surged to No. 8 in the On3 Consensus team rankings.

The Ducks are not anticipated to add any more prep commits on Wednesday, and Lanning met with reporters shortly after Pleasant’s commitment.

Lanning fielded questions regarding Oregon’s work on the recruiting trail and the state of the Ducks’ roster. He also talked in-depth about a handful of the program’s transfer portal additions.

“I think speed — we’re gonna be a faster team,” Lanning said when asked how the Ducks’ 2023 class improves Oregon as a team. “I think size, especially at places in the trenches, is where we’ve improved. Ultimately you wanna be a faster team and a bigger team, and we did those two things.”

Lanning also discussed the significance of Oregon’s work recruiting in the state of California.

“We’re always gonna play games in California, I think that’s important for us. We always wanna sign the best players from the west coast; ultimately, we wanna sign the best players everywhere. But if you can win in your footprint — and certainly California is part of that — we wanna have success. I think we proved this year that we can do that.”

On3 Team Rankings, powered by the On3 Consensus

The On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking is our best work yet. It is the most advanced, complete and unbiased ranking measurement in the industry, yet its simplicity makes it easy for fans to follow and understand.

+ The On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking is the only ranking that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies: On3, 247Sports, Rivals.com and ESPN.

+ The On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking is the only ranking that equally weights the four major media companies at 25%. Other industry composite ratings disproportionately weight their own rating.

+ The On3 Consensus Team Recruiting Ranking solves the problem of varying class sizes during the recruiting cycle. It compiles the highest-rated commits for each team up to a total based on a rolling average of current total commitments among Power 5 schools.

With this model, there are no bonus points for having more commitments than other teams and only small deductions occur when a team has fewer commitments than the rolling average. Unlike distribution (bell) curves, this model doesn’t disproportionately weight a team’s top three or four highest-rated commits and is a more accurate representation of an entire class.
