Penn State special teams analyst Keith Bruno is leaving the Nittany Lions after just one season in State College. FootballScoop first reported the news. The outlet’s John Brice reports that Bruno is taking a job outside of college football. He is no longer listed in the program’s staff directory. Earlier this offseason, it listed him as the assistant special teams coordinator. He was hired as a special teams analyst in January of 2024.

“Bruno has elected to step away from his role as assistant special teams coordinator at this moment despite how he had immersed himself in the Penn State program,” Brice writes for FootballScoop. “Sources told FootballScoop that Bruno had thrived in and particularly enjoyed his time in Franklin’s Penn State program, which is coming off a program-best College Football Playoffs Semifinals appearance and a 13-win season.

“Bruno has decided at this time to step away from collegiate coaching and plans to accept a role outside of the profession, sources told FootballScoop.”

Bruno, like the rest of the Penn State analysts, was able to have a hands-on role at practices and on game day after an NCAA rule change last season.

“He just brings an awesome energy into our room,” Penn State punter Riley Thompson told reporters last April. “He’s got so much knowledge on special teams and a whole lot of experience. So it’s been great to have him here.

“I definitely think he’ll be awesome to have throughout the year. He’ll provide a lot of insights into the special teams for not only us but for everyone who’s playing on special teams. So, it’s really awesome to see.”

Penn State will replace Bruno

Penn State has not yet listed an official job posting to replace Bruno. But, it will replace him. Lions special teams coordinator Justin Lustig still has analyst Eric Sasche working under him. Who will join the staff remains to be seen. But the program will likely move quickly to find a replacement. Bruno is the second special teams departure this offseason. Kicker Chase Meyer hit the transfer portal last week. He has not yet found a new college home.

Penn State finished spring practice with the Blue-White game on Saturday. The program is now focused on transfer portal additions and recruiting during the spring evaluation period.
