Penn State football news, notes, and updates for Aug. 5 include an insanely early bowl projection plus an update on Lions alum Torrence Brown.

It’s time to dive into Friday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with a sure sign that it is August: Way-too-early bowl projections are out!

The Sporting News is the first outlet to take a stab at picking which teams will play in each postseason matchup. It’s an exercise in futility now, just as it will be in September, October, and most of November. But, it’s still fun to think about in the days leading up to the kickoff of the 2022 season.

At any rate, SN college football writer Bill Bender slotted Penn State opposite LSU in the Music City Bowl. If the prediction is miraculously correct, it would mean the Lions will finish their season on New Year’s Day with a Noon ET kickoff in Nashville, Tenn., on ABC.

We’ll see how it plays out.

In other news, The Daily Collegian has a great feature on Penn State alum Torrence Brown. The defensive end who medically retired during his time with the Lions ended up coming back to finish his career at Southern Miss. That’s the school he was originally committed to before flipping to Penn State late in his recruiting process.

Brown is now a graduate assistant at Marshall. That means he now works for Charles Huff, who is the Thundering Herd head coach but was on staff at PSU when he was in State College.

“When I got hurt, I kind of got a chance to see it from the other side,” Brown told The Daily Collegian. “I became an undergraduate assistant at Penn State where I helped out with practice a little bit.

“I knew that was something that I wanted to do. So, as of right now, it’s something I’m pursuing, and I’m all in.”

Finally, we’ll share an inside look from Penn State at a preseason camp practice.

Quote of the day

“You would think this is a really hungry team and staff because they’ve fallen off the last few years, and they’re not as relevant nationally.

“Clifford needs protection, and they need to get creative with the playmakers they’ve got. Having an experienced passer and not installing a new system is a huge win for them. This could be a bounce-back season.”
