Penn State news, notes, and updates for Aug. 14 include a look back at the Lions’ open practice plus an assessment of Drew Allar and more.

It’s time to dive into Monday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with a look at Penn State quarterback Drew Allar. In his annual ‘QB confidential’ piece, ESPN college football writer Adam Rittenberg took a look at passers from every major conference. One of them was the former five-star and Nittany Lions sophomore who is set to take over as the program’s starter under center this fall.

“He’s got really good arm talent,” a Big Ten defensive coordinator told ESPN. “I don’t think he’s super athletic. I think he moves decent, where Clifford, at times, we missed three or four sacks on him with his ability to move around. There’s always [quarterbacks] who get the hype, and you just don’t know.”

James Franklin has not named a starter yet. He is allowing Allar and classmate Beau Pribula to compete for the job. But, it’s only a matter of time before the former lands it. Then, once the season arrives, all will learn whether or not the hype is legitimate or not.

In other news, Penn State held its first open preseason camp practice of 2023 on Saturday. Check out some scenes from it below.

Quote of the day

“I think you just get a wide view of all the pieces that are coming together. You get to meet some kids that normally you wouldn’t have in your area. You kind of get to oversee all the guys on the offense.

“We have amazing guys on the offensive staff and on the defensive staff that are great recruiters. And, so, it kind of makes it easy. Just kind of watching a lot of these guys do their work and trying to do your part. But you’re more involved with being a part of more guys than you would just as a position or an area coach.”
