Penn State head coach James Franklin and his staff were challenged Saturday more than most expected. Although the Nittany Lions ultimately prevailed, winning 34-27, Bowling Green exposed a few areas that the team will need to improve on if they’re ultimately going to reach the College Football Playoff later this year.

“I think it’s very valuable,” said Penn State quarterback Drew Allar when asked about being challenged in the home opener. “I think, in general, we’ve had two very tough opponents to open up the year and it’s just going to help us. Obviously, the schedule is going to get tougher every week. We’re going to have to do a good job with just preparing every week. I think no matter who we’re playing, we have to worry about our process and how we prepare for games. None of that can change based on the opponent.”

Penn State now heads into an early season bye week before hosting Kent State on Sept. 21. But before we turn the page, Nittany Lion fans can check out Blue White Illustrated photographer Steve Manuel’s photo gallery right here.
