Bo Bassett recruiting update: No. 1 wrestling prospect recaps recent visits, trims to 14 schools

Top Class of 2026 recruit Bo Bassett whittled his list of over 40 suitors to just four on Monday. Now, his pick is in. The Johnstown, Pa., Bishop McCort standout will wrestle next at Iowa. Penn State, the Hawkeyes, Oklahoma State, and Virginia Tech were his finalists. Bassett is the No. 3 pound-for-pound high school wrestler in MatScouts rankings. Those call him the top wrestler in the country at 144 pounds.

“Those are the four I could see myself at the most, and that’s what it came down to,” Bassett told FRL on Monday.

“I think first of all, the recruiting process has been incredible. I’ve loved every second of it. It’s been more challenging than I thought it would ever be, but it was fun. It was something I’ve worked for my whole life. And so I think for me, why it’s sped up is because the time I’m in. As far as the season, I’ve got a lot of big things coming up, and I want to focus more on training right and kind of be set in stone with where I’m going to go all in on that place, and then go all in on my training as well, rather than having to balance them all.”

NIL was part of the final decision but does not appear to have been the end-all, be-all, at least based on his public comments.

“I can tell you this, I’ve been hearing a ton of different things at school, and practice at home; it’s kind of crazy, it’s laughable to be honest,” Bassett said Monday. “But I can tell you that, obviously, NIL is a piece of it. But I’m more focused on the wrestling right? I want to achieve all my goals and do this and that, but I can tell you that all the offers have been very comparable.

“It’s all been very comparable, and I’m just excited to again get this out there and start working.”

Reviewing the Nittany Lions’ Class of 2026 so far

Penn State currently has one verbal commitment in the Class of 2026. It is from a teammate of Bassett’s, Sam Herring, who competes at 138 pounds. He is FloWrestling’s No. 20 pound-for-pound wrestler in the Class of 2026. Besides Bassett and Herring, the Lions hosted some official visitors this fall. That group includes Flo’s No. 2 Class of 2026 wrestler, 138-pounder Jax Forrest from Bishop McCort, and Florida heavyweight Michael Mocco, among others.
