The Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the Michigan State Spartans 42-0 on Friday of last week to end the 2023 regular season. While it was almost a week ago, it’s important to review and understand how the team finished the season. On today’s BWI Live Show, we break down how the offense finished the season with its best overall performance of the season.

Penn State puts together a complete offensive performance

The Penn State offense was in rare form against Michigan State. The team compiled over 300 yards combined, passing between quarterbacks Drew Allar and Beau Pribula. Allar had one of his best games of the season, throwing for 292 yards and two touchdowns in the win. For once, the team was able to start fast and establish successful plays, even if it didn’t end in points.

“I thought the game started out, the offense was able to move the ball up and down the field, we just weren’t finishing drives with touchdowns. But besides that, I thought we did some nice things,” Franklin said.

In today’s show, we’ll explain Penn State’s tweaks to the offense under the new dual coordinator setup with Ja’Juan Seider and Ty Howle. These tweaks put players like Nick Singleton, Tyler Warren, and Theo Johnson in a position to succeed instead of other offensive players. We’ll break down how the team used similar concepts to gain much better results. We’ll also discuss where Michigan State was poor in defense.

This is all in the light that Allar’s status was a question coming into the game after getting knocked out of the contest agaisnt Rutgers.

“The was no doubt in my mind that I wasn’t gonna be able to play today. [The] training staff did a good job with me. I knew I was gonna play all week,” Allar said.

Defensive dominance so complete its almost taken for granted

Finally, we’ll discuss how the Penn State defense used a significant advantage up front to shut down another offensive unit completely. The game plan, as usual, started with pressure up front. But with Michigan State, it was an extra emphasis.

“Sack battle, we thought that was the most significant stat all week long. We talked about that. If you look at the success when it comes to wins and losses with Michigan State, that was a powerful statistic, winning that battle,” Franklin said.

We discuss how Penn State used its advantage in the trenches to shut down Michigan State’s running game and then attack the edges of the pocket to get constant pressure.
