Penn State redshirt freshman running back Cam Wallace suffered an injury two Saturdays ago late in the Nittany Lions’ 56-0 win over Kent State. With just over 5:30 to play in the contest, the Georgia native took a handoff from backup quarterback Beau Pribula and was met by Golden Flash defender Mason Woods. It immediately became clear that something was wrong, and the training staff quickly attended to him, and specifically, his left leg. The second-year Nittany Lion tried to walk off the field with support from trainers. But, eventually, a group of defensive linemen led by Hakeem Beamon ran onto the field to carry Wallace the rest of the way to the sideline. Then, a cart took him into the locker room as the Lions finished their win over the Golden Flashes.

James Franklin was not asked about Wallace’s status after the game. Even if he would have been, there likely would have been no update. However, the 11th-year leader of the Lions was asked about the running back today following Wallace missing the Illinois game. What did he have to say?

“It will be a long-term injury,” Franklin said. “He will be out.”

To start the season, Penn State had five scholarship running backs on its roster. Star juniors Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen lead the way. Then, the team has Wallace plus freshmen Quinton Martin Jr., and Corey Smith. Martin Jr., made his debut against Kent State. He took over for Wallace and carried seven times for 24 yards. He did not play against Illinois. Like fellow freshman and tight end Luke Reynolds, who is forced into a bigger role with redshirt freshman tight end Andrew Rappleyea out with a long-term injury, Martin Jr., could be forced to burn his redshirt, too. Time will tell on that, though. The fact that he was not needed against the Fighting Illini is a good sign in that regard. But, that may not be the case moving forward.

Franklin said Monday that nothing has changed in the green-yellow-red perspective. Reynolds, Cooper Cousins, and Dejuan Lane are all green-lit to play and use a year of eligibility. Others could move into that category depending on how the season goes, Franklin said.
