Penn State men’s basketball has landed the verbal commitment of On3 four-star power forward Carey Booth. The nation’s No. 80-ranked player in the Class of 2023, Booth is the son of former Nittany Lion great Calvin Booth.

Booth also represents the biggest and best recruiting splash of the Micah Shrewsberry era at Penn State.

Considered the 15th-ranked power forward in the class, Booth is an inside-outside threat with the ability to post-up in the block or knock down 3-pointers.

Jamie Shaw’s evaluation of Carey Booth

According to On3 national hoops recruiting analyst, Jamie Shaw, Booth has made steady progress in his development.

“Carey Booth is a high upside player who is just starting to come into his own. You watch him play and you see the shooting touch with the developing confidence. He also has great length and natural timing on the defensive end.

“There will still be a learning curve when it comes to figuring out his own game and how he can be most effective on the offensive end. Strength will be a thing, too. However, there is a load of upside here, and a player you can see taking big strides year over year in college as he continues to develop.”

Path to Penn State

Booth has been a heavy target of the Nittany Lions’ throughout his recruitment period. Originally of Cherry Creek in Colorado, the elder booth now the President of Basketball Operations for the Denver Nuggets, Booth has since transferred to Brewster Academy in New Hampshire this summer.

Playing both with Brewster and his AAU team, KC Run GMC, Booth earned a spot on the Pangos All-American Camp Top 30 Cream of the Crop, and is playing in the organization’s All-American game this weekend. He also helped guide his AAU team to tremendous success this summer.

“Booth, the son of former NBA center Calvin Booth, is just booming with upside,” Shaw wrote. “While still inconsistent, he did finish with two threes en route to 12 points. Booth moves well, both vertically and laterally. Strength and game reps will be his biggest thing moving forward, but it is easy to see why 25 or more schools have jumped on board.”

In addition to Penn State, Booth added offers from Florida, Southern Cal, Arizona State, Ohio State, Missouri, Texas Tech, Colorado State, Xavier, Wake Forest, Northwestern, Marquette, Oklahoma State, Iowa, and Cal since April. Booth did not announce a set of finalists.
