Carey Booth requests release from letter of intent
The first shoe has dropped following the exit of Micah Shrewsberry from the Penn State basketball program. Announced on Twitter via his coach, Jason Smith, Brewster Academy forward Carey Booth has requested his release from his letter of intent. Blue White Illustrated has confirmed.
Booth is the No. 74-ranked player in the Class of 2023 according to the On3 Industry ranking. He’s 6-foot-10, holds a four-star rating, and is considered the No. 15-ranked power forward in the country. His game, however, is that of a stretch four with a shooting touch from beyond the arc.
He was one of three players to commit to the Nittany Lions in the class. The others are Shrewsberry’s son, Braeden Shrewsberry, and his Indiana Elite AAU teammate, Logan Imes. They have not yet publicly announced requests for releases from their letters of intent. Both are anticipated to do so.
Carey Booth evaluation
The son of Denver Nuggets president and former Nittany Lion great center, Calvin Booth, Carey landed on the Nittany Lions after a lengthy recruitment. Considered a talented prospect with tremendous upside due to his relatively young age, Booth was evaluated as a strong shooter and a natural on the defensive end, with great length.
“There will still be a learning curve when it comes to figuring out his own game and how he can be most effective on the offensive end. Strength will be a thing, too,” said On3 national analyst Jamie Shaw. “However, there is a load of upside here, and a player you can see taking big strides year over year in college as he continues to develop.”

Next steps
Upon his pledge to Penn State, the senior Booth indicated what had drawn his son to the Nittany Lions on August 24.
“During the process, I felt like it kind of convoluted things that I went to Penn State,” Calvin Booth said. “It was more about Coach Shrewsberry’s aptitude and his plan for Carey. And, the upside he has as a coach, and the upside the program has because he’s running it.
“Coach Shrewsbury, whatever school he was at, Carey probably in all likelihood would have followed where he’s at. But now that it’s Penn State, I think it’s big-time. It’s a great college, a great place to go to school, and great people around there.”
Penn State athletic director Patrick Kraft announced an immediate search for the program’s next head coach on Wednesday afternoon. This list includes likely early candidates for the position.
