Penn State Football missed out on quarterback Matt Zollers in May and then Dia Bell in the Class of 2026 earlier this month. But the Nittany Lions didn’t stay down for long, picking up the commitment of California passer Troy Huhn on Tuesday morning. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder discusses Huhn’s decision to join the program and the events that led up to the Nittany Lions securing the sixth-ranked quarterback in the Class of 2026.

The quarterback dominoes lead Huhn to Penn State

Penn State recruiting fans may know that Bell was one of the program’s top targets for the next recruiting cycle at quarterback. But as Snyder discusses in the video, we focused on him thanks to his many visits to Happy Valley. In reality, there was a cluster of top passers that Penn State separated from the pack. Once Bell committed elsewhere, things began to fall into place.

Snyder discusses how Huhn took an East Coast trip earlier this month that had a surprise when he arrived in Ann Arbor to visit Michigan. He also discusses how quarterbacks coach Danny O’Brien and starting quarterback Drew Allar factored into the decision to join Penn State.

As we typically do when discussing a commit that lives outside the Penn State footprint, we discuss the reality of a decommitment with a player who joins the program a year early. Will that happen with Huhn? While we don’t ahve a crystal ball, Snyder discusses what he knows of quarterback recruiting among the top prospects and his understanding of Huhn’s personality.

What the Lions are getting in Huhn

While Huhn is still a very young quarterback, he’s a top prospect for a reason. We review how On3’s 60th-overall player operates the quarterback position and what his strengths are. We detail his positional mechanics, including his release, footwork, arm strength and size.

Despite being labled a “pocket passer”, does Huhn have the athleticism to operate Andy Kotelnicki’s dynamic offense? We review the nuances in his footwork, speed, and his ability to manipulate the pocket.

Huhn is the second player in Penn State’s 2026 cycle. It’s an impressive group so far, with Harrisburg running back Messiah Mickens leading the charge. Mickens slots in just behind Huhn as the 65th player in the next recruiting cycle.
