STATE COLLEGE — Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was on the practice field Wednesday night as the No. 3 Nittany Lions continue preparations for Saturday’s visit from No. 4 Ohio State. The media does not see contact or live periods during its typical midweek viewing window. Thus, reporters only saw the junior who missed the second half of the Wisconsin win with a left leg injury doing basic throwing and jogging. Still, it’s a step in the right direction, and he looked good while doing so, even if it’s no guarantee he will play and/or be 100 percent on Saturday when the Buckeyes invade Beaver Stadium (Noon ET, FOX).

Lions coach James Franklin will hold a post-practice news conference to offer the latest on Allar. It will mark his final chat with reporters before his post-game news conference on Saturady afternoon. The 11th-year leader of the Lions will be on the Penn State Coaches Show Thursday night. But, new news about Allar’s status will not come up in the program-friendly environment, meaning the next update will come Saturday morning when the Lions issue their Big Ten availability report two hours before kickoff.

Penn State will take as long as it needs to make a decision

Franklin made that much clear during his Monday news conference to kickoff game week.

“I think he’s played enough football for us that, that timeline will go all the way up to the game reall,” Franklin said. “It’s too early to tell at this point. But he’s played enough football that I think that decision will go all the way up to game time.

“But the reality is, we’re going to have to have both guys ready. You could even make the argument all three guys ready, which is challenging to do in a game week, is to try to get all those guys ready. Have had some conversations with Danny [O’Brien] and Andy [Kotelnicki] about that already. We’ll continue to have conversations. But I do think Drew has played enough football that it will go all the way up to game time until we make that decision.”

Penn State will turn to backup Beau Pribula if Allar can either start but not finish the game or not play period. The third-year Nittany Lion was 11 of 13 for 98 yards and a touchdown during the final 30 minutes of the win over the Badgers.
