The excitement surrounding the idea of Penn State facing one of its former head coaches in a coordinator role in 2024 lasted less than a month. After taking the Ohio Stae offensive coordinator job on Jan. 19, Bill O’Brien is already leaving the Buckeyes. ESPN and multiple media outlets reported Friday morning that O’Brien will be the new head coach at Boston College. He takes over for Jeff Hafley, who left the Eagles after four seasons to become the Green Bay Packers’ new defensive coordinator.

The move allows O’Brien, 54, to return to the college head coaching ranks for the first time since he guided the Nittany Lions from 2012-2013. It also gets him back to where his family resides in Massachusetts. As for the Buckeyes, it puts the favorite to win the Big Ten in a position of having to hire a new play caller on offense less than a month before the team starts spring practice on March 7. Who head coach Ryan Day will go with now is going to be a hot topic in college football circles over the next couple of weeks. The Buckeyes were said to have had numerous high-level options before picking O’Brien. He most recently was on the New England Patriots’ staff.

Penn State welcomes Ohio State to Beaver Stadium on Nov. 2. It will do so with a new play caller. OSU is bringing Chip Kelly in to replace O’Brien.
