Penn State news, notes, and updates for July 8 include where a former Nittany Lions coordinator will coach next, headlines of the day, and more.

It’s time to dive into Monday’s top tweets and stories about head coach James Franklin’s program and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with the latest on former Penn State defensive coordinator John Butler. He will be Nebraska’s next defensive backs coach. ESPN first reported the news. Butler left his job with the Buffalo Bills earlier this year after he was passed over for the team’s open defensive coordinator job, which went to another assistant on the AFC East franchise’s staff, linebackers coach Bobby Babich.

“Once that decision is made, it’s time for me to see if I can be a coordinator somewhere else,” Butler told The Athletic. “I’m at my best when I’m in charge. I ran the secondary for six years, but there’s a ceiling there.”

Butler will not be in charge of the Cornhuskers defense. But, it does keep him in the coaching game until next year’s carousel offers what he hopes will be a chance to become a coordinator again. After leaving Penn State to follow Bill O’Brien to the Houston Texans, he has been a position coach ever since. That won’t change this year. But, it certainly could down the road.

Quote of the day

“The Big Ten needs Penn State. And I think they understand. But we’ve can’t just sit back and expect certain outcomes. You have to be aggressive. You have to explain and be positive. It’s not about being a jerk. It’s just fact. So you have three networks choosing. This year is a very unique year in that. So there is an actual draft that goes that goes on. So we’re all trying to learn and go through that. But I’ve had many calls about the White Out.

“Look, the White Out is the greatest college event, period. It’s not just football. But I need to continue to remind people not around us how great that event is. Because when they come, they’re like, ‘Whoa.’ And I think that’s just my job is to continue to advocate for us. This one is just a unique situation because it’s new. You got FOX, CBS, NBC and this kind of draft process.”
