Former Penn State player among three dead in Maryland car accident
Former Penn State player A.J. Lytton, 24, was among three dead in a Maryland auto accident early Saturday morning. The three-car crash also claimed the lives of Isaiah Hazel, 23, and Khyree Jackson, 24, all former students at Dr. Henry Wise High School in Upper Marlboro, Md.
Lytton was a player at Penn State during the 2021 season after transferring from Florida State in June of 2021. He spent his first two years playing for the Seminoles in 2018 and 2019 before sitting out for a year. During his time with the Nittany Lions, he appeared extensively as a special teams performer, playing in 11 games during the campaign.
In response to the tragic news, Penn State released a statement to mourn Lytton’s death.
“The Penn State Football Family mourns the loss of former Nittany Lion, A.J. Lytton,” the statement read. “Our thoughts & prayers are with his family, friends, high school & all involved in the tragedy.”

“Hazel and Jackson were pronounced deceased on the scene by emergency medical service personnel. Lytton was transported to the University of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center where he was later pronounced deceased by hospital personnel. All three victims were occupants of a maroon Dodge Charger involved in the crash. Hazel was the driver. Jackson was the front seat passenger and Lytton was seated in the rear of the vehicle.”

According to the report, police responded to the crash at 3:14 a.m. on Saturday morning in Upper Marlboro, where three vehicles were involved in the crash. An initial investigation showed a driver changing lanes at high speeds hit the car in which Lytton and his friends were traveling, sending them off the road, at which point they struck multiple tree stumps.
The driver and her two passengers were not injured in the crash, nor was the driver of another vehicle involved in the accident. Additionally, according to the report, “Investigators believe alcohol may have been a contributing circumstance in the crash. Charges are pending the investigation and consultation with the Prince George’s County State’s Attorney’s Office. The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the investigation.”
