Former Penn State receiver picks transfer destination
A former Penn State receiver has announced where he will continue his college football career.
Daniel George announced on social media Wednesday night that he will play next at Akron. He’s the second one-time Lion to pick the school in as many days. Lineman Anthony Whigan also committed to the Mid-American conference school this week.
Both players will now suit up for former Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead, who is now the Zips’ head coach. He accepted that job back in December after stints as the Mississippi State head coach and the offensive coordinator at Oregon in recent years. Moorhead left the Lions in 2018 to take the top job with the Bulldogs.
As for George, he entered the transfer portal back in January.
“First, I want to thank God for blessing we to be in this position,” George wrote on social media when he declared his intentions to leave Penn State. “These past four years at Penn State have been some of the greatest, most memorable years of my life. All the experiences, friendships, and lessons I’ve learned have helped mold we into the man I am today. I want to thank Coach Franklin and the whole coaching staff for developing me as not only a football player but as a man. I also want to thank the academic staff and professors for their continued support throughout my journey.
“To my brothers, thank you for always pushing me to reach my full potential. The memories we made together are irreplaceable. I also want to thank the whole Penn State community. I’m grateful for all the opportunities and connections that have been offered to me. The alumni and fan base are unmatched!”
Retracing George’s career at Penn State
George came to Penn State with loads of potential. He only realized some of it, however.
His career in blue and white started off with much promise in 2018. He played as a freshman and did most of the work on a 95-yard connection with quarterback Sean Clifford against Kent State which still stands as the longest pass play and play from scrimmage in Penn State history.

However, he only recorded nine receptions for 100 yards in 2019 before reeling in seven passes for 73 yards in 2020. George had no counting stats in 2021 and then sat out the team’s Outback Bowl loss to Arkansas. About 20 days later, he entered the portal in search of his next stop.
Akron is a logical fit. Moorhead was part of his recruitment to Penn State. And, current Zips quarterback coach Billy Fessler was part of the Lions program when George was visiting campus as a prospect.
A graduate transfer, George, who is an Oxon Hill, Md., native and former four-star recruit, has two years of eligibility remaining.
