Former Penn State receiver Jahan Dotson is standing out at Commanders' OTAs
Former Penn State receiver Jahan Dotson surprised some when he went with the 16th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft to the Washington Commanders. However, it shouldn’t shock Lions fans that the former All-American is fitting in quickly in the pros.
Reports out of rookie minicamps were glowing. NBC Washington said at the time that:
“Jahan Dotson can be described in many words, and almost all of them point to him being an early contributor in the regular season. The rookie receiver is smooth, polished and agile, but there’s definitely explosiveness to his game, too. His sticky hands were also immediately apparent, especially during a route-running portion of practice where he speared a Sam Howell pass on a hitch just after turning around.
“Overall, Dotson already looks prepared to mix it up with the veterans at OTAs and training camp.”
Now, OTAs have arrived. And Dotson is standing out again through practice number five, which was more ramped up than the others were.
Reviewing Dotson’s start to OTAs
According to multiple reports, Dotson has been stealing the show as the Commanders start meshing their veterans with members of their latest draft class. Per NBC Sports, one play in particular stood out above the rest on Wednesday.
“Jahan Dotson was the recipient of a Carson Wentz touchdown strike during 9-on-9 drills midway through Wednesday’s practice, a perfectly thrown ball from the Commanders’ new quarterback,” Ethan Cadeaux writes. “Dotson, who originally lined up on the left before running a post towards the middle, hauled in Wentz’s pass in between two defensive backs for six points. The throw — and catch — were equally impressive, as the entire sideline erupted in cheers after the play.

Teammates and coaches alike have quickly picked up on Dotson’s abilities, according to NBC Washington.
Head coach Ron Rivera:
“I like his route running. I think he runs very good routes. He’s very precise with them and he’s got natural hands. It’s just a matter now of him learning and developing and growing within the scheme and really just refining his game.”
Offensive coordinator Scott Turner:
“He’s done a nice job. He came in and it looks like it’s not too big for him. He’s playing fast, he’s consistently getting separation and he’s catching the ball.”
Quarterback Carson Wentz:
Running back J.D. McKissic:
“Just to see a young rookie come in and be so developed. He’s developed, he’s running crisp routes. I’m very shocked how [quickly] he’s learned the offense. He’s doing incredible. He’s learning the offense, flying around and making plays.”
