Former Penn State running back picks transfer destination; latest updates on Purdue: Newsstand
Penn State football news, notes, and updates for Aug. 30 include the transfer pick for a former Nittany Lion plus new news on Purdue. Today’s rundown also covers new recruiting offers and sights and sounds from open practice on Monday night.
It’s time to dive into Tuesday’s top tweets and headlines about Penn State and college athletics.
Tweets of the day
We start with an update on Caziah Holmes.
Multiple media outlets reported Monday that the former Penn State running back, who entered the transfer portal earlier this month, has exited it by enrolling at Florida State.
The Cocoa Beach, Fla., native considered the Seminoles out of high school but ultimately signed with the Nittany Lions. However, he redshirted last year and did not have a clear path to the field this fall. Holmes won’t have one at FSU, either, at least not this fall, as he’d need a waiver to be eligible to play right away. However, he could practice with it this fall after walking onto the ACC school’s roster.
In other news, both Boilermakers coach Jeff Brohm and Lions leader James Franklin held their first game week media sessions on Monday.
Each complimented the other’s program as expected.
“We’re excited to get this season started off this upcoming Thursday at home against an outstanding opponent,” Brohm told reporters in West Lafayette. “A lot of history and tradition at Penn State. We definitely realize we’ll have our hands full, this is a very talented team.”

Brohm did not make any news otherwise. Franklin certainly did, however. He named former five-star and freshman Drew Allar the team’s Week 1 backup quarterback. The leader of the Lions also declared a few position battle winners. Barney Amor and Jake Pinegar will be the kicker and punter, respectively. All three battling guards — Sal Wormley, Hunter Nourzad, and Landon Tengwall — will play, and Tyler Elsdon has topped Kobe King for the starting middle linebacker job.
Finally, for this section, we’ll highlight some recruiting updates. Penn State sent offers out to the following players on Monday:
- Garrett Stover, 2024 linebacker from Ohio
- Malachi Toney, 2026 receiver from Florida
- Jahmir Jacobs, 2025 athlete from New Jersey
- Taylor Tatum, 2024 running back from Texas

Quote of the day
“He’s earned that throughout camp. He’s had a really strong camp. I’m really proud of him. I used him as an example with the team the other day. You’re talking about a guy in today’s day and age, you know with the transfer portal, here he is as a guy who was a two-year starter for us and then ends up losing his starting role and doesn’t just run the transfer portal at the first sign of adversity.
“He stays and sticks it out, and here he is. One of our leaders on our team, and has had a really good camp. I think he’s going to have a big big year for us. I’m really proud of him for a lot of reasons.”
