Former Nittany Lions standout Chris Godwin received a massive new contract from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason. It was welcome news for both sides, as the receiver had expressed interest in remaining with the NFC South team but was both eligible for free agency and recovering from another injury. The question of where he’d suit up in 2025 was answered when the Bucs signed the Delaware native to a three-year, $66 million deal in March that includes $44 million in guaranteed money, per ESPN. When Godwin will retake the field, however, is still not clear. He continues to work his way back into game shape following an ankle injury that ended his 2024 season early.
“I’m hoping he’s on the field, Week 1,” Tampa Bay coach Todd Bowles said this week during league meetings in Florida, per NBC Sports. “I’ll have more to know about that as the month goes on, see how he’s healing and getting running and practicing and everything else, but my hope is for him to be on the field Week 1.”
It’s surely Godwin’s hope, too. He has missed parts of a few seasons due to injuries. However, his seven games played in 2024 were the fewest of his career.
“People always give us credit for betting on Chris during his injuries,” Bucs GM Jason Licht said, per the Tampa Bay Times. “But he and [his wife] Mariah bet on us and we’re going to do everything we can to make sure that we make it right for you and chase another ring.

Quote of the day
“We can always use help. I think the objective is to be the best in the country at every position, and we’re working to become that. And until we become that, yes, we do need help at receiver. We just got to keep building the room the right way, bringing in the right guys, and then when the opportunity presents, we just got to perform at a high level. So I don’t disagree.
“I love the guys that we have. The ultimate thing is to always, constantly get better. That’s nothing that the guys in the room would shy away from.”
