Penn State cornerback recruit Dorian Barney locks in summer commitment date

Penn State fans will have to wait another five weeks to learn where four-star cornerback Dorian Barney will play at the next level. On Tuesday, the Carrollton prospect informed On3 that he’s set to announce his decision on July 5. The announcement is expected to come around 4:30 p.m. eastern time.
“After the visits, by July 5, I will know where I want to go,” Barney told On3’s Chad Simmons. “I am looking for a school that will develop me and a good culture to be in. A place where I can get my name out fast is important too, and the perfect fit and comfort for my family and me are other things I want in a school.”
Listed at just under 6-foot-1, 170 pounds, Barney is a consensus four-star prospect at all four major recruiting sites. On3’s Industry Rankings have him ranked No. 197 nationally, No. 19 at cornerback and No. 21 in Georgia.

Although he now plays in Georgia, Barney didn’t move south until a few years ago. In fact, he grew up in Erie, Pa., and still has strong family ties to that area.
“I lived in Erie for basically my whole life,” Barney said. “We moved down here in 2021, so my eighth-grade year. I got family down here in Georgia, so we made that move then. It’s really 50/50. I got half my family in Erie and half of my family in Georgia.”
Barney took his official visit to Penn State back on May 16. He spoke very highly of the experience.

“That’s probably the best visit I’ve been on so far,” said Barney. He added, “I really just learned a lot about how they develop people not only on the field, but off the field. They make sure that their guys are great all-around. I like their approach. Also, just the time we spent bonding. I felt like I got to bond with all the coaches. It was just the best.”
Barney has consistently mentioned Penn State assistant Terry Smith as one of the coaches he’s closest with. Head coach James Franklin has also worked to get to know Barney and his family. Seeing his personality up close was another major highlight of the visit.
“Coach Franklin is an open person, especially with him being a head coach,” Barney said. “He’s open to all of his players, but he’s open to the recruits and their families, too. He has really good relationships with the families. He loves my family. So, I just like the way he presents himself as a person. He doesn’t only care for the players on the field, but he cares for them off the field, too.”
According to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, Penn State has a 53.6 percent chance of landing Barney’s commitment.
