It’s no secret that offensive tackle is one of Penn State’s most important positions in the Class of 2024. With the Nittany Lions already holding commitments from Cooper Cousins, Donovan Harbour and Caleb Brewer, all of whom will likely be interior linemen, offensive line coach Phil Trautwein has been working hard in recent weeks to wrap up some potential tackle prospects before official visits begin in June.

Trautwein got his wish over the weekend, as Wisconsin native Garrett Sexton decided not to wait until May 1 to announce his decision as previously expected. Fresh off an unofficial visit to Oklahoma Friday and Saturday, Sexton said he got home Sunday evening and almost immediately reached out to Penn State’s coaching staff.

“Honestly, I just knew it was going to be Penn State,” Sexton said, when asked why he decided to commit before his previously announced May 1 decision date. “I feel like I’ve known that for a few weeks now, so why wait?”

He went on to add, “We flew home from Oklahoma yesterday and I had a talk with my parents about everything. We all just felt good about it, so I reached out to [Penn State’s] coaches and asked to get on a group call with them all. Once we got on the group call, I just let them know everything I love about Penn State and committed right there. They were all super-hyped for me. It was a great call.”

As Sexton admitted following his only trip to Penn State back on March 30, it was that visit that set the bar high for any school to beat. There were multiple factors that played into the decision, most notably his connection with the coaches and current players.

“I love the staff. From Coach Trautwein to Coach [James] Franklin and everyone else there, I felt like we really connected. The players were great, too. Talking to the players, I thought they were all open and honest about what it’s like at Penn State. But also, it’s so professional there. When I was there, I just saw myself playing there for my college career.”

Sexton said he’s also already started talking to a few of the committed players, too.

“A couple of them reached out. Since I committed yesterday, they reached out to welcome me,” he said. “I heard from Cooper and one their tight end, Luke Reynolds. He’s been messaging me a bit. I just got added to their group chat, so that’s awesome. I’m looking forward to getting know those guys more.”

Sexton ultimately chose Penn State over Iowa, Minnesota and Oklahoma. He also added a late offer from his in-state school, Wisconsin, this past Friday. However, that was never going to change his mind.

“I appreciated them offering. I had visited there and they told me the next day that they wanted to wait to offer. They originally wanted to see me camp over the summer. We talked about it briefly after they offered last week, but I’ve known for a while now that it’s going to be Penn State. I’m excited about my future there.”

Sexton is now the third-ranked player in Penn State’s Class of 2024. He’s currently ranked No. 115 in the On300, No. 13 at the offensive tackle position and No. 2 overall in Wisconsin. Penn State ranks No. 10 overall in the On3
