No. 11 Penn State is all but set to take on No. 8 Utah in Monday’s Rose Bowl. The two sides have never met. And, it will be the last time “The Grandaddy of Them All” is contested between PAC-12 and Big Ten teams intentionally. That’s because the Rose Bowl is a College Football Playoff semifinal site next year and will then be a part of the expanded Playoff rotation in 2024 and beyond.

“They play a good brand of football, I think similar to ours with physicality and really stressing on defense and making sure the offense is playing complimentary,” Utes quarterback Cameron Rising said about the Lions.

“It’s going to be an exciting game because of how well they play on both sides of the ball.”

“They’re physical up front, they do a really good job of getting knock-back on the defensive line, creating holes for the running backs to find,” Lions defensive tackle PJ Mustipher told PennLive.

“Their running backs, we were watching film, they’re not going out of bounds. They’re going to try to run right over you. … When you as an offense, get in those third and short, second and medium (situations), you can run the ball and it really puts a defense on their heels.”

As we noted above, the two teams have never met. In its last Rose Bowl trip, Penn State lost to USC 52-49 back in 2016. The Utes, meanwhile, were in Pasadena last year and lost 48-45 to Ohio State.
