The Penn State home opener is here. The Nittany Lions are just hours from welcoming Bowling Green to Beaver Stadium. They host the Falcons for the first time since the 1990s. Both teams are 1-0 after each earned a comfortable Week 1 victory. Head coach James Franklin’s team knocked off West Virginia 34-12, while Scot Loeffler’s side beat Fordham 41-17.

“The biggest thing is penalties,” Franklin said Wednesday when asked what he wants to clean up from Week 1 to Week 2. “And when I talk about penalties, as you guys heard me say before, it’s not necessarily the penalties that happen during the play. It’s the pre-snap penalties and the post-snap penalties. Those are the ones that you got to clean up. They’re focus and discipline penalties. But that’s probably the biggest thing from player’s perspective, and then a combination of players and coaches, is the timeouts. You know, we’ve done a really good job of not burning timeouts and having all three timeouts, or at least two timeouts, available at the end of the half and the end of the game. And I think we burned three timeouts, one in really all three phases, offense, defense and special teams. And we don’t want to be doing that.”

Current BGSU quarterback Connor Bazelak will see first-year Penn State defensive coordinator Tom Allen, who coached the passer at Indiana.

“It’ll be great seeing him,” Bazelak said, per the Toledo Blade. “We had a great relationship when I was there at Indiana, and obviously he’s moved on to Penn State. Luckily, I was able to practice against his defense for a year at Indiana, so some of the stuff I’ve seen and some of the stuff he’s changed. But it’ll be great to see him.”
