No. 11 Penn State plays its ninth game of the year and fourth on the road today when it visits SECU Stadium for a matchup with Maryland. The Nittany Lions are a two-score favorite for the Big Ten East showdown. With the conference set to expand, the two sides will no longer meet every season. After this year, they will play in 2024 and then not again until 2027.

“They’re a fast defense,” Maryland coach Mike Locksley said this week. “When you look at the six sacks at the Northwestern game, I’d say we gave up three, and three of them were scrambles where we have to throw the ball away. It’s going to be important that we’re really sound on our assignments. We’re going to have a bunch of one-on-one battles where we have to compete. Says screens will be part of their plan of attack.”

Head coach James Franklin also talked to reporters this week.

“Obviously, I got a lot of history with the university,” Franklin said. “I was there I think for eight years. Was kind of my first big break in the profession. I’ve got tremendous respect for the university as a whole and the athletic department. Was there for a long time two different times.

“Was with Coach Locksley, and got a lot of respect for him and what he’s been able to do throughout his career. We were at the University of Maryland I think from 2000 to 2002 together, three years if I’m remembering that correctly.”
