Penn State head coach James Franklin silent on the goal line sequence

The Penn State offense had three trips into the red zone and came away with only six points. The most pivotal came in the fourth quarter with less than ten minutes left. The Nittany Lions had the ball at the goal line and four chances to score, but they came away with zero points. When asked why Tyler Warren, who has run the ball in that situation previously, didn’t get a shot, he didn’t have much to say.

“Yeah, we gave the ball for the running back, I think three times, threw the ball on the last one. Yeah, should we probably have given the ball to Tyler Warren after the plays he made? Yeah, I get the question. I get it.”

Franklin determined to keep his eye on the prize

Sean Fitz and Nate Bauer discuss the reality that the Penn State staff went out to find a more explosive offense to beat teams in the biggest game. Despite the success early in the year from offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki, it was more of the same with just six points from the offense.

After the game, Franklin had similar thoughts about his team.

“Can’t have the ball inside the five-yard line twice and come out with no points, one turnover, which is very uncharacteristic for us, and then another turnover, basically on downs. The pick-six was a huge play in the game, but we only scored six points on offense. We scored seven points on defense against a really, really good team. Are they good on defense? Yes, but do we got to find ways to manufacture points in yards? There’s no doubt about it.”

The team left the field to boos and fans throwing garbage on the field. Franklin didn’t disagree with the reaction outright.

“I understand their frustration. Guys in the locker room are just as frustrated, if not more, but college football has changed, and we have an opportunity moving forward to right some wrongs from today, and that’s what we’re going to focus on. I get it. We get an unbelievable crowd here. We get unbelievable support. You. Don’t do that without passion.”
