Penn State held an open practice on Saturday and as always, Blue White Illustrated was there to give you insights into which players are standing out and which groups are making progress through the summer. Today, host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer focus on the offensive and defensive lines to give Nittany Lion fans a snippet of practice.

O-line and D-line take center stage in extended open period

They discuss the pass-rushing drills both T-Frank and Bauer watched on Saturday. Thankfully, it was a longer session than normal for the media. So the pair took in one-on-one drills with the offensive and defensive line. In particular, a battle between Dani Dennis-Sutton and Drew Shelton was the highlight for Bauer, while T-Frank paid attention to left tackle Olu Fashanu’s performance.

Other players that stood out

Next, T-Frank and Bauer discuss Maryland transfer Demeioun “Chop” Robinson and his progress through camp. T-Frank got a chance to watch him work in drills and has a verdict on whether or not he’ll be a major factor to begin the season at Purdue. Bauer backs up what T-Frank saw with some of his insight into the situation.

Finally, Bauer throws out several other names, like freshman linebacker Abdul Carter that stood out to him in practice. T-Frank does the same.

Inside the Den: Which Penn State second-year players are primed for impact?

Penn State football is officially into game prep mode. With a trip to Purdue set for Sept. 1, that means just 10 days separate the Nittany Lions from the start of the 2022 season.

And many members of Penn State’s second-year class will impact the program’s success.

Some are already well-known, players like Jaylen ReedChristian Veilleux, and Kalen King making a splash from the job. Others are expected, but yet to be proven. And some could prove to be surprise contributors

With camp in the books, it’s time to take a look at that group, some of its standouts, and how it might contribute to the Nittany Lions’ fortunes this season.

Here, is an insider’s perspective on second-year players set to make a mark this season, presented in alphabetical order.

Penn State second-year status report

Dom DeLuca

Dom DeLuca was the star of the Blue-White Game, nabbing a couple of interceptions at linebacker during the weird half-scrimmage, half-practice event.

It wasn’t a fluke.

Moving in tandem with Jon Sutherland from safety into Penn State’s Sam linebacker spot in Manny Diaz’s system, DeLuca had a solid spring and followed it with a solid summer and solid camp. He’s consistent, and for lack of a better descriptor, he’s just a winning football player.

The move from safety to linebacker was a big change with plenty to learn, but DeLuca worked through it and is now ready to contribute. Don’t be surprised when he shows up on game days, both as Sutherland’s backup (which is sparing as it is because the position comes off the field on passing downs) and on special teams.
