Is Penn State favored against Oregon and Ohio State? Early point spreads are out

Penn State will win just one of its two marquee regular-season games in 2025, new point spreads posted at DraftKings suggest. The betting operator posted lines for the Lions’ White Out date with Oregon on Sept. 27 and for its Big Ten clash with Ohio State in The Horseshoe on Nov. 1 over the weekend. The odds suggest that head coach James Franklin’s team will knock off the Ducks at home but fall to the Buckeyes on the road. That is not overly surprising news, given the preseason betting odds for all three teams to win the national title. But, what is interesting is that the lines are currently suggesting that both games will be decided by more than a field goal.
Penn State is lined as a 4.5-point favorite over head coach Dan Lanning’s team in the rematch of last year’s Big Ten title game. It is a 4.5-point underdog opposite Ryan Day’s side, which is riding an eight-game winning streak in the series.
The two contests are part of three involving the Lions that are now available for bettors to pick from at DraftKings. The other is the season opener. Penn State is listed as a 45.5-point favorite for its matchup with Nevada. That game starts at 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 30. CBS will televise it. The over/under betting total for that game is 59.5 at FanDuel. No totals are out yet for the aforementioned Big Ten contests.

Penn State against the spread fast facts
Penn State will be a favorite of 40 or more points for the fifth time since 1999 and the fourth time in the James Franklin era when it hosts the Wolfpack, according to OddsShark. The Lions are a perfect 5-0 against the spread in those games, and under Franklin, they’ve never surrendered more than seven points in those contests while pitching a pair of shutouts.

The Lions’ marks against the Buckeyes over the last decade and change are not as kind, of course. Since taking over in 2014, Franklin and his teams are 1-10 straight up against Ohio State but 7-4 against the point spread. When it comes to the Ducks, PSU did not win or cover in last year’s Big Ten title game.
Penn State-Oregon will start at 7:30 p.m. ET. NBC will televise it. No kick time is in yet for the clash with the Buckeyes. But, it will surprise no one if that game ends up being the B1G Noon Kickoff game on FOX that week.
