Penn State wrestling takes the mat for the first time in 2024 tonight. The No. 1 Nittany Lions are on the road for a non-conference dual meet at Oregon State. It’s the third meeting all-time between the two schools. Head coach Cael Sanderson’s side has won all of them. The No. 16 Beavers are led by Chris Pendleton. They are 4-1 on the year and have multiple ranked wrestlers. This is the first time the non-conference foes will meet in Gill Coliseum.
“They have a very good team and are very motivated and just a really good staff that’s doing a great job,” Sanderson told reporters this week. “So yeah, it’ll be a great match. I think our guys are used to the big stage and big crowds So yeah, it’ll be it’ll be fun to just go see where we’re at.”

What are the top matches to watch?
Make no mistake: Penn State is favored in this meet, but there will be some challenges. Nine of Oregon State’s 10 projected starters are ranked. On paper, based on InterMat’s rankings, the closest bout could come at 165 pounds. Undefeated Nittany Lion Mitchell Mesenbrink, who is No. 12 in his weight class and 9-0, will look for a rankings upset over No. 10 Matthew Olguin. The junior is 10-2 on the year. Another fascinating bout will come at 184 pounds. There, No. 2 Nittany Lion Bernie Truax, a senior who is 5-0 so far this year, will battle No. 6 Trey Munox. The Beavers’ junior is 11-2 this season. And, at 174, top-ranked star Carter Starocci meets No. 7 Travis Whittlake.

Last but not least, most Penn State fans will be watching the 125-pound bout closely. Unranked freshman Braeden Davis is expected to make his debut as the Lions’ starter in that weight class. He will face a stiff test while doing so. Oregon State senior Brandon Kaylor is 11-4 so far this year and No. 15 in the country.
