Penn State head coach James Franklin spoke with the media on Tuesday to kick off the fifth week of football in the 2023 season. Check out the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel or today’s recap article to hear his complete comments.

Explosive plays become the main topic again

Nate Bauer joins the BWI YouTube channel to discuss his impressions of Franklin’s conversation with the media and to give his thoughts on the team through four games this year. As it has been for the last three weeks, explosive plays came up quickly during the nearly 45-minute press conference.

“I think we need to be able to show that we can grind it out to win, which we have, but I also think we need to show that we can be explosive to win, as well. We’ve done that at times but probably not as much as we’ve grinded it out, but I would also say that also plays a little bit to how people were playing us,” Franklin said, explaining his team’s desire for “balance” and his interpretation of what balance means.

We continue the discussion around explosive plays and how the game last week against Iowa was a specific choice for the team, according to Bauer.

Penn State vs Northwestern early preview

Next, we discuss Penn State’s next opponent, Northwestern. Franklin commented in his opening statement about the Wildcat’s style of play and what his team will face this coming weekend.

“I do think Ben Bryant, their quarterback, is probably the best pure thrower that we’ve seen this year.”

We discuss how a fresh challenge will give us a chance to learn something new about the Penn State defense, which has faced similarly-styled teams early in the year.

Lastly, we discuss Penn State quarterback Beau Pribula and his role on the team so far this year. Once again, Franklin got a chance to warn future opponents about his athletic backup quarterback.

“We’d like to get him involved more in a situation where he can actually run our offense because I think right now he’s being used primarily as a runner, but we feel like we can run the whole offense with him.”

“But we want to continue to develop that, and then there’s obviously a place for getting him in situationally throughout the game, as well, maybe in the red zone or maybe in 3rd down or maybe as a change-up. We had a play we were going to run yesterday, and it was during a time-out, and I kind of vetoed it at the last minute. But he’s got a bigger package than what you’ve seen to this point.”

We break down the likelihood of Pribula having a package that we haven’t seen yet in the Penn State offense and discuss what advantages it creates in the run game, especially with a starting quarterback who has a different playing style.
