Penn State has made the top seven for a priority Class of 2023 recruiting target.

Jven Williams included the Lions in his shaved list of schools on Saturday. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound offensive tackle from Reading, Pa., Wyomissing is also still considering Rutgers, Pitt, Ole Miss, Michigan, Michigan State, and Illinois.

Williams is the nation’s No. 88 player according to the On3 Consensus rankings, which is a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the No. 6 interior offensive lineman and is considered the top player in the Keystone State.

On3 has Williams even higher among juniors. Its own rankings call the guard the nation’s No. 42 overall recruit, No. 4 interior offensive lineman, and also the No. 1 player in Pennsylvania.

A decision timeline has not yet been outlined.

Williams talks Penn State

Williams most recently visited the Nittany Lions during the December window when prospects could come to campus.

“They’ve been very consistent. I’m in touch with them a lot,” Williams told BWI’s Ryan Snyder. “I talk to Coach Trautwein a pretty good amount. Chris Mahon, their recruiting coordinator, is another guy I have a very good relationship with.

“Coach Franklin reaches out now and then, too. I think we have a very good relationship starting. They’ve been great since they offered.”

Penn State offered Williams back in September. Before cutting his list, 16 schools were in the running.

Phil Trautwein is the Lions’ lead recruiter, but numerous members of the Penn State staff are involved in the chase to land Williams, per the usual.

“When I got there, all their coaches were outside waiting for me. That was great. I appreciated that,” Williams told BWI. “We got to see a ton of their gear and tour facilities. We also got into some big cars to drive around campus and show me around. One of the main highlights was the time I spent with Coach [Phil] Trautwein and his assistant, Coach [Wendy] Laurent.

“We went into his O-line meeting room and he showed me a bunch of stuff. He showed me his blocking techniques, the different ways he coaches, all of that. That was awesome to see. Just really getting a feel for how he really is, and also what the facilities were like. That was the main thing.”
