Kaytron Allen makes three-straight for Penn State on Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors
James Franklin has repeatedly insisted that Penn State’s running backs room features a dangerous pair of true freshmen. Saturday afternoon in a win over Central Michigan, Kaytron Allen demonstrated as much. Monday, he was rewarded for it.
Allen finished with 111 yards and a touchdown on just 13 carries against the Chippewas. For the effort, he was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
With the nod, Penn State earned its third-consecutive conference Freshman of the Week honors. Nick Singleton, the Nittany Lions’ other talented true freshman back, brought home the distinction thanks to his performances against Ohio in Week Two and Auburn in Week Three of the 2022 season.
Kaytron Allen’s career-best performance
Per Franklin, none of it should come as a surprise. Commending Allen for the effort, Franklin offered that it’s been the norm throughout his time on campus.
“That is who he is and who he has been. You guys are starting to see it now. We have seen it in the spring and seen it in the summer, a lot more than you have had the opportunity to see,” Franklin said Saturday. “I do not think there is anybody in that locker room that is surprised with Kaytron ‘s success. I do think they are good complementary pieces. We have two young backs that do good things to build on.

“He has good vision. He has good contact balance, and he has a good understanding of how to set blocks. When you are able to do that, and you have the toughness that he has as well then, he can consistently get eight to 12 yards which obviously is what we need.”
Through his first four games as a Nittany Lion, Allen has emerged with Singleton as the 1-2 punch Penn State has sought in the running backs room.
On the stat page, that has led to 42 carries for 376 yards and four scores for Singleton, while Allen isn’t far behind. Rather, at 36 carries for 217 yards and three touchdowns, the two have combined to already exceed Penn State’s combined running back scoring for the duration of the 2021 campaign in the first one-third of the year.
