Recap: Penn State sets program history in 56-0 blowout win over Kent Satte

Penn State football is back on the field today.

STATE COLLEGE — Penn State made program history on Saturday against Kent State. The Nittany Lions 718 yards of total offense, which is a new program record, in a 56-0 win over the Golden Flashes. It broke the mark of 706 set in 1926. Drew Allar threw three touchdowns and eight different Nittany Lions found the end zone. Read how it happened below.

Fourth quarter updates

6:55 — Beau Pribula scores from a yard out. Penn State will win, 56-0.

6:38 — Not good news for Penn State late in this one. Third-string running back Cam Wallace is taking a long time to get off the field. And now, the linemen have come to carry him off to the sideline.

6:31 — Max Granville forces a fumble and Antoine Belgrave-Shorter picked it up and raced into the end zone. It is under review. But, the touchdown is overturned on the field as the pass is ruled incomplete instead of a fumble. Still a great play by Granville and Kent State will punt again.

6:22 — Touchdown, Penn State: Cam Wallace runs in from a yard out. The Lions’ lead over Kent State is 49-0 with 9:21 left in the fourth quarter.

6:15 — Kent State will punt again. There is 13:40 to play in the fourth quarter.

Third quarter updates

6:09 — After three, Penn State leads Kent State 42-0. It has a 583 to 64 yards advantage. The Golden Flashes have 3rd and 5 on their own 33 coming out of the break.

5:59 — Kent State quickly goes three and out. Jake Spencer fumbled but fell on the ensuing punt. Lions take over at their own 38 with 3:50 left in the thrid quarter.

5:50 — Touchdown, Penn State: Beau Pribula hits Khalil Dinkins for a wide-open 13-yard touchdown. The Lions lead Kent State 42-0 with 4:55 left in the third quarter.

5:43 — Kent State punts on its first drive of the second half. Penn State takes over at its own 9. And, No. 9, Beau Pribula, is taking over the offense. Drew Allar’s day is over. He finishes 17 of 21 for 309 yards and three touchdowns.

5:33 — Touchdown, Penn State: Drew Allar to Omari Evans for an as-easy-as-they-come 59-yard scoring strike. The Lions’ lead over Kent State is 35-0 with 13:13 left in the third quarter.

5:28 — The second half is underway.

Second quarter updates

5:09 — HALFTIME: Penn State 28, Kent State 0. Drew Allar has two passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown, and Tyler Warren has a passing and receiving score.

5:06 — Touchdown, Penn State: Drew Allar runs in from five yards out. The Lions lead Kent State 28-0 with 15 seconds left in the first half. They have a 396-46 yards advantage.

4:56 — Touchdown, Penn State: Drew Allar hits Liam Clifford for a 14-yard score. The Lions lead Kent State 21-0 with 1:29 to go in the first half.

4:50 — Chunk play: Allar to Liam Clifford wide open down the middle of the field for a big gain to the Kent State 24. It’s a 38-yard pitch and catch. Penn State has 1st and 10 there following the two-minute timeout.

4:47 — Kent State backup QB JD Sherrod is limping off putting no pressure on his left leg. The new QB, the Golden Flashes’ third of the day, is Tommy Ulatowski. The Golden Flashes hand off and then punt.

4:40 — Touchdown, Penn State: Tyler Warren throws to Nicholas Singleton for a 17-yard scoring strike. Yes, you read that right. Lions lead Kent State 14-0 with 5:49 left in the first half.

4:34 — Sack: Abdul Carter gets his first of the year to end another Kent State drive. The Golden Flashes will punt it back to Penn State. Lions lead 7-0 with 8:30 to go in the first half.

4:28 — Penn State will punt it away after a short drive stalls out at the PSU 15. Drew Allar was pressured on third down and had to throw it away.

4:22 — Kent State will inexplicably punt on 4th and 5 at the PSU 41. It’s downed at the Lions 3, so they’ll take over there with 13:30 left in the first half.

First quarter updates

4:17 — After one, Penn State 7, Kent State 0. Golden Flashes have 1st and 10 at the PSU 46 when the second quarter begins.

4:12 — Touchdown, Penn State: Drew Allar zips a 16-yard scoring strike to tight end Tyler Warren. Lions go up 7-0 with 2:38 to go in the first quarter. The touchdown toss capped a nine-play, 89-yard drive in 4 minutes, 41 seconds.

4:00 — Sherrod’s third down pass sails out of bounds and Kent State will punt for the second time today. Penn State will take over with about seven minutes to go in the first quarter.

3:54 — Beau Pribula comes in at quarterback with Drew Allar still on the field, and his pass to Tyler Warren on a tunnel screen is intercepted. Kent State takes over at its own 41. Penn State had a promising drive going before that.

3:48 — JD Sherrod is now in at quarterback for Kent State after Kargman was taken off via a stretcher. He hands off on 3rd and long and the Golden Flashes will punt for the first time today.

3:43 — Dani Dennis-Sutton crushed Kent State QB Devin Kargman, who fumbled but Kent State recovered. Kargman is now down on the field being attended to by the trainers. The cart is already out to take him off. He was taken off on a stretcher. JD Sherrod is now in at quarterback for Kent State.

Pregame updates

3:38 — Penn State wins the toss and defers. Kent State will have the ball first at Beaver Stadium. Kickoff is moments away on the Big Ten Network.

3:34 — They are about to bring the teams out onto the field at Beaver Stadium so, if there will be a weather delay, it does not appear that it will halt the start of the game, at the very least.

3:19 — Penn State announces there is lightning in the area of Beaver Stadium. There is no indication yet that the Lions’ matchup with Kent State will be delayed. But, it seems possible.

2:57 p.m. — Full team out on the field working through stretch lines. Another 41 minutes until kickoff.

1:48 p.m. — These Penn State players are OUT today: safety KJ Winston Jr., quarterback Jaxon Smolik, linebackers Kari Jackson and Keon Wylie, defensive ends Zuriah Fisher and Mason Robinson, receivers Mehki Flowers and Peter Gonzalez, tight end Andrew Rappleyea, and linemen Sam Siafa, Liam Andrews, De’Andre Cook, and T.A. Cunningham.

Penn State arrived at Beaver Stadium around 1:30 p.m. ET. More updates to follow once warmups begin.
