11:41 p.m. – Another three and out for Penn State, as Clifford goes 0 for 3. Lambert-Smith was held on the third down throw, but no flag. 4:28 left in the game.
11:37 p.m. – A chop block penalty bails Penn State out. A delay of game then makes it 3rd and 30 and the defense gets off the field. 4:50 left in the game following a solid punt. Penn State begins at their own 27. 31-28, Purdue leads.
11:31 p.m.: The Lions are in trouble, as Purdue converts on a third down and then Penn State is charged with pass interference. First down Purdue at PSU’s 46 now. 5:33 to go.
11:28 p.m.– PSU gets a first down early, but then they can’t convert on third down and are forced to punt. 6:27 left in the game.

11:15 p.m. – PSU’s defense plays aggressively and gets another three-and-out. Daequan Hardy almost had an interception, but the Lions will get the ball regardless at their own 35-yard line. 9:04 left.
11:06 p.m. – Touchdown, Penn State. Massive play there by KeAndre Lambert-Smith. A 29-yard slant breaks perfectly for Lambert-Smith and he races down the middle for a score. Penn State 28, Purdue. 24. 10:44 left in the game.

10:46 p.m.: Penn State forces a 4th and 1, but Purdue goes for it and gets it. They’re down inside the red zone again at the 7-yard line.
10:39 p.m. – Clifford doesn’t look right since returning with a few shaky throws. He went 0 for 3 that drive. Penn State punts it again. Nice coverage on a 46-yard punt has Purdue at their own 17-yard line.
10:36 p.m. – Penn State looked like they were going to go three-and-out, but a defensive holding call extends the drive. First down at the 31.
10:34 p.m.: Penn State forces a much-needed three-and-out after the Boilermakers put together a long drive to start the half. Lions get the ball at the 21-yard line following a nice punt. Parker Washington almost made a nice return, but his arm was ruled down.
10:25 p.m.: Allar leads a seven-play drive for 30 yards, but he’s unable to complete the pass to Parker Washington on 3rd down. He had room to run in it, too. Learning experience. A beautiful punt by Amor then goes to waste, as the punt team knocks it into the end zone. Purdue ball at the 20.
10:19 p.m.: Drew Allar will make his Penn State debut with Sean Clifford in the locker room. It’s unclear why he is. He came out after halftime then went back in before kickoff and hasn’t returned.

9:27 p.m.: Touchdown Penn State: A e Sean Clifford sneak from two-yards out with some help from friends puts the Penn State quarterback in the end zone and the Lions have retaken the lead with 1:44 left in the half.

9:19 p.m.: Penn State forces a three and as O’Connell throws it over Jones’ head. Lions force the punt. Lions will take offer at the Purdue 43.
9:13 p.m.: Penn State can’t make Purdue’s penalties hurt, as Sean Clifford’s third down pass to Mitchell Tinsley falls incomplete. Lions will punt midway through the second quarter. Barney Amor did pin Purdue at its own three. Goes without saying, but this is an enormous series for Manny Diaz and co. They talked all offseason about being aggressive and physical. Time for the Penn State defense to show it here with a three-and-out.

8:50 p.m.: Touchdown, Penn State: Sean Clifford to Mitchell Tinsley for a 12-yard pitch and catch to put the Lions ahead over at Ross-Ade Stadium. Jake Pinegar’s extra point is good, and it’s 7-3 PSU early in the second quarter.
8:48 p.m.: Penn State goes play action and Clifford flips to Devyn Ford for a first down to keep this drive moving on 4th and 2. Nice play design and execution out of a heavy package.
Lions-Boilmakers first quarter updates
8:43 p.m.: A KeAndre Lambert-Smith drop helped stall an otherwise productive Penn State drive. Lions face 4th and 2 at the Purdue 29 when the second quarter begins. That’s all for quarter one.
8:38 p.m.: Penn State opens its third offensive series of the game with a wide-open Sean Clifford flick to Parker Washington for 20. Kaytron Allen is the running back this series.
8:30 p.m.: Purdue marched into Penn State territory with a few nice pass plays, but the Lions defense held firm from there. However, the Boilermakers take a 3-0 lead on a 36-yard field goal with 3:38 left in the first quarter.
8:25 p.m.: Chop Robinson comes in and makes his Penn State debut at end on this drive. Jaylen Reed has also come in at safety for Keaton Ellis and Kobe King is in for Tyler Elsdon on this second Lions defensive series. Joey Porter Jr., just dropped a sure interception that instead turned into a Purdue catch and first down.
8:22 p.m.: Penn State will punt again after Sean Clifford and KeAndre Lambert-Smith cannot connect on third down. But, Barney Amor does at least flip the field position. Purdue takes over at its own 10. Great punt by the new starter.
8:20 p.m.: Sean Clifford changed that last Penn State play at the line of scrimmage, and it got Parker Washington wide open for a first down catch. Good example of what year two with Mike Yurcich means in action. It equaled another first down for the Lions.

8:15 p.m.: Nick Singleton is in for his first series at Penn State. He takes his first carry for nine.
8:12: Purdue picked up a couple of first downs as quarterback Adian O’Connell looked sharp out of the gate. Parker Washington was the starting punt returner.
8:08 p.m.: Penn State sees its first series of the year end with a three and out after Sean Clifford’s third down pass for KeAndre Lambert-Smith didn’t connect. Barney Amor onto punt.
8:05 p.m.: We’re underway at Ross-Ade Stadium. Nick Singleton fair catches the opening kickoff, giving Penn State the ball at its own 25. Keyvone Lee starts at running back as expected.
Penn State pregame updates
The Lions arrived just after 6 p.m. Head coach James Franklin was off the bus first. His team followed.
Penn State is in its road whites this evening as Purdue fans plan to ‘Blackout’ the venue while the team is wearing black tops and pants.
Here is what we learned before kickoff (refresh often for the latest news):
- Penn State game captains are Chris Stoll, Jonathan Sutherland, Ji’Ayir Brown, and PJ Mistipher. Lions will get the ball first after Purdue won the toss and deferred their choice to the second half.
- It appears Keyvone Lee will start at running back for Penn State. And, KeAndre Lambert-Smith looks to be third receiver while Keaton Ellis is set to start at safety beside Ji’Ayir Brown.
- Receiver Harrison “Tre” Wallace is now wearing No. 6 instead of No. 85.
- Penn State traveled all four scholarship quarterbacks: Sean Clifford, Drew Allar, Christian Veilleux, and Beau Pribula.
- Freshmen who made their first road trip with the Lions include defensive tackle Zane Durant, safety KJ Winston, defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton, running backs Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen, receivers Kaden Saunders and Omari Evans, linebacker Abdul Carter, offensive linemen Vega Ioane and Drew Shelton, corner Cam Miller, and the two quarterbacks.
- It’s a bit warm on the field for the first day of September, but not terrible. Temps are in the low 80s and will eventually fall into the 70s.
- There is no wind to speak of.
