Penn State survives 26-25

Penn State picks up the 4th and 1 at the Minnesota 14 as Allar hits Warren to the Minnesota 3 and the Lions can run the clock out from here. It was far from a pretty win. But, it was a win for the Nittany Lions, who survive in Minneapolis to improve to 9-1.

Penn State calls timeout with 27 seconds left

Nick Singleton rushes for 9. It’s fourth and 1 with 55 seconds to go. Penn State runs it down to 27 seconds and calls timeout.

The Lions can’t quite run the clock out without a first down but they can get close.

Penn State gets a first down on fourth down

On 4th and 1 at the Minnesota 25, Penn State sneaks it and gets a first down. At the two minute warning, Penn State leads the Gophers 26-25. Minnesota has just one timeout left.

Penn State picks up a huge fake punt gain

Drew Allar runs on 3rd and 9 and picks up eight. It’s 4th and 1 and Penn State will punt it away as the clock ticks under four minutes from its own 34. But it’s a fake, and Luke Reynolds rips off a long run and rips up those special teams grades. Wow. First down PSU at MIN 34. There are three minutes to go.

Minnesota pulls within one

Minnesota’s 26-yard field goal is good. Penn State 26, Minnesota 25 with 5:48 to play. The Golden Gophers got to the PSU 8 but no closer on that drive.

Lions add to their lead

Ryan Barker’s 32-yard field goal is good. Penn State leads Minnesota 26-22 with 11:51 to go but again can only get three off a Golden Gophers’ turnover for the second time today.

Penn State picks up a fumble

Minnesota QB Max Drosmer dropped the first snap of the fourth quarter. Penn State recovers the fumble, and it takes over at the Minnesota 41.

Three quarters are in the books

Three quarters are in the books in Minneapolis: Penn State 23, Minnesota 22. The Golden Gophers have 2nd and 5 at the 50 to start the third quarter. Lions own a 263-223 yards advantage despite having just 56 rushing yards.

Penn State retakes the lead

Touchdown Penn State: Nick Singleton rushes in from 12 yards out. The Lions looked as good as they have all game on that quick and efficient scoring drive. PSU 23, Minnesota 22 with 3:43 left in the third quarter.

Penn State gets a stop and gets it back

Penn State gets a sorely needed stop as Brosmer missed an open receiver and almost threw an INT. Lions will take over at their own 43 with 5:41 left in the third quarter.

First Penn State first second half drive ends without points

Tyler Warren pooch punts to the Minnesota 22 from the Minnesota 38. Drew Allar is all wound up on the sideline. Penn State’s first drive of the second half ends without points. Minnesota 22, PSU 16 with 7:19 left in the third quarter.

Minnesota opens the second half with a field goal

Minnesota’s 42-yard field goal is good. Gophers 22, Penn State 16 with 9:59 to go in the third quarter. Lions’ defense bent a bit but didn’t break on its first series of the second half.

Halftime: Minnesota 19, Penn State 16. The Lions are without starting right tackle Anthony Donkoh. The special teams have been brutal. The Golden Gophers get it to start the second half.

“We just have not played well in the first half. We have to get some things cleaned up obviously. But we will come out in the second half and play well,” James Franklin told the Penn State Sports Network.

Penn State scores

Penn State went 75 yards in six plays, aided by a defensive pass interference penalty on Minnesota, to pull within one before halftime. Drew Allar ran in from two yards out to even the score at 17 with 19 seconds left in the first half. However, Minnesota blocked the extra point and raced back for a score. It’s Minnesota 19, Penn State 17 with 19 seconds to go in the second quarter.

Minnesota goes back in front

Touchdown, Minnesota: Gophers pull out some trickery and it leads to a wide open James Geers. The hosts go back on top 17-10 with 1:03 left in the first half. Brutal sequence there for the Lions, as Riley Thompson’s punt was blocked after a brutal third down INC from Allar.

Penn State gets it back

Great open field tackle by Kobe King will force a Minnesota punt late in the first half. The Lions take over at their own three with 2:26 to go before halftime.

Lions tie it up

Turnover for Penn State

Interception: Dom DeLuca dropped in coverage and Max Brosmer never saw him and threw it right to him. A good return has Penn State set up in Minnesota territory. The Lions have it at the Minnesota 23.

Touchdown Penn State: Drew Allar finds Omari Evans beyond wide open for a 45-yard scoring strike to put the Lions on the board in Minneapolis. Evans went from right to left across the field and the Golden Gophers just lost him. Minnesota 10, Penn State 7 with 10:48 left in the first half.

Minnesota extends its lead

Minnesota’s 48-yard field goal is good. The Golden Gophers lead Penn State 10-0 with 12:56 to go in the first half.

The first quarter is in the books

End of one: Minnesota 7, Penn State 0. The Lions are now without starting tackle Anthony Donkoh and were outgained 97-35 over the first 15 minutes. The Golden Gophers have 1st and 10 at the PSU 32 when the second quarter starts.

Penn State turns it over on downs

Facing a 4th and 5 from the Minnesota 33, Drew Allar took a 12-yard sack and Minnesota takes over at its own 45. The Golden Gophers only sent four rushers and got immediate pressure leading to the sack late in the first quarter.

Penn State punts again, then gets a quick stop

Penn State punts again. It’s now 1 for 3 on third down, unable to get a yard on its first possession and two on its second before punting. Minnesota leads 7-0 with 5:58 to go in the first quarter. However, Penn State forced a quick punt of its own with 4:27 left in the first quarter. Penn State will take over at its own 50, trailing Minnesota 7-0 with 4:13 left in the first quarter.

Touchdown, Minnesota. Marcus Major ran in from 20 yards out. And, Anthony Donkoh needed crutches to get to a cart on the sideline that will take him to the locker room. Not a good first six minutes for Penn State in Minneapolis. It trails 7-0.

Penn State goes wildcat with Tyler Warren on 3rd and 1 and Minnesota sniffed it out and stuffed it. The Lions first drive ends with a punt.

Anthony Donkoh is hurt

Starting Penn State right tackle Anthony Donkoh is having his right knee looked at on the field after the Lions’ second play of the game. Training staff just helped him up but he needs help to get off the field.

The opening kickoff was a touchback. Penn State starts at its own 25.

Penn State will receive

Penn State calls tails. It’s heads. Minnesota wins the toss and defers. The Nittany Lions will receive to start this game in Minneapolis. Kickoff is moments away on CBS.

He was listed as questionable on the injury report but has been full-go in warmups and out with the first-team offense.

Penn State, Minnesota down key secondary pieces

For Penn State, receivers Kaden Saunders, safety KJ Winston Jr., running back Cam Wallace, linebackers Keon Wylie, tight end Andrew Rappleyea, cornerback Elliot Washington II, and defensive end Zuriah Fisher are OUT. Receiver Julian Fleming is questionable.

Washington II was hurt last week. He left the game at halftime and did not return. Fleming did play last week but was not seen at practice this week.

For Minnesota, starting free safety Aidan Gousby is out. That means the Golden Gophers will have to shuffle their secondary.
