Recap: Penn State falls to Ohio State 20-13 at Beaver Stadium
FINAL: Ohio State 20, Penn State 13
11/2/2024, 3:23:04 PMThis game will be defined by many things: Penn State’s struggles on offense, including two trips to the OSU, one in each half, resulting in zero points, officiating, and a lack an ability to cash in on big moments. Penn State falls to 7-1.
Penn State cannot cash in despite goal to go setup
11/2/2024, 3:04:41 PMDrew Allar’s fourth down pass is incomplete, ending a chance to tie or take the lead. Penn State again wanted either DPI or holding and again didn’t get it as the Lions could not score after setting up 1st and goal at the OSU 3. A 33-yard Tyler Warren rush set the goal to go situation up. Buckeyes 20, PSU 13 with 5:13 to go.
Ohio State catches a break, kicks a field goal
11/2/2024, 2:50:59 PMOhio State has extended its lead to 20-13 after it kicked a field goal. It only had the chance to do so after an Quinshon Judkins fumble, which Penn State recovered, was overturned to an incomplete pass upon review. You can watch the play below.
After three, Ohio State still leads
11/2/2024, 2:38:45 PMEnd of three: Ohio State 17, Penn State 13. Buckeyes have 1st and 10 at its own 33 to start the fourth quarter.
Two sacks sink latest Penn State drive
11/2/2024, 2:36:39 PMA delayed blitz let Cody Simon race through the Penn State offensive line to sack Drew Allar for a big second down loss, and then familar face JTT gets home for Ohio State on third down. Penn State will punt it away late in the third quarter. OSU takes over its own 15.
Carter sack leads to another Ohio State punt
11/2/2024, 2:30:06 PMSack: Abdul Carter gets to Howard again and pulls him to the ground on 3rd and 8. Ohio State will punt it back to Penn State with about three minutes to go in the third quarter. A nice punt return from Zion Tracy sets Penn State up at its own 38 with 2:56 to go in the third quarter. Ohio State leads the Lions 17-13. Olu Fashanu and Ji’Ayir Brown are being recognized during this commercial break.
Penn State pulls within four
11/2/2024, 2:23:12 PMRyan Barker’s 44-yard field goal is good. Ohio State 17, Penn State 13 with 5:03 to go in the third quarter. The Lions have still not scored a touchdown on offense in this game, partially because it is 2 of 8 on third down.
Ohio State adds a field goal after key Penn State stop
11/2/2024, 2:12:16 PMKobe King had Will Howard stopped on 3rd and 6 but he flipped it to Henderson for a first down. However, it appeared the OSU QB’s knee was down before he did so, and he would not have reached the line to gain. After review, Howard was ruled down. The Buckeyes’ 46-yard field goal was good. They now lead 17-10 with 10:40 left in the thrid quarter.
The second half is underway
11/2/2024, 2:06:17 PMThe Penn State-Ohio State second half is underway. The Buckeyes get the ball first.
Huge Penn State turnover erases Lions chance to take the lead; OSU leads 14-10 at halftime
11/2/2024, 1:45:31 PMPenn State saw a chance to take the lead right before halftime be literally ripped right out of its hands. After making a great catch to set the Lions up at third and goal at the OSU 3, Trey Wallace had the ball ripped out of his hands by OSU DB David Igbinosun in the end zone. It turned a scoring chance into a touchback. The Buckeyes then took a knee. They lead 14-10 at the half and get the ball first to start the second half. OSU has a 191-145 yards advantage. Penalties, those called and those not, were a big part of the first half conversation. But PSU being 2 of 7 on third down and having little in the way of a vertical passing game was a big problem, too.
“Well, we got to stop hurting ourselves. Besides that, I have to watch what I say,” James Franklin said on the Penn State Sports Network.
Carter gets a big sack
11/2/2024, 1:31:53 PMHello, Abdul Carter: He beats Donovan Jackson off the edge and drops Will Howard for a big sack. Ohio State lets it run down to the two-minute warning. Buckeyes will punt after that. OSU 14, PSU 10.
Penn State cannot take advantage of the turnover
11/2/2024, 1:29:21 PMDrew Allar wanted roughing the passer called on thrid down, it was not, and he jogs off after his third down pass fell incomplete. Penn State will punt again with just under four minutes to go in the first half. The Lions have absolutely nothing working in terms of the passing game.
Penn State forces a turnover to erase a Buckeyes score
11/2/2024, 1:22:19 PMZakee Wheatley knocked the ball out of OSU QB Will Howard’s hand at the PSU 2 and it went through the end zone. It was ruled a touchdown on the field but was overturned to a touchback upon review. So, instead of the Buckeyes going up 21-10, Penn State takes over at its own 25 down 14-10 with 6:28 to go in the first half. Huge swing there.
Next Penn State drive ends with a punt
11/2/2024, 1:10:36 PMAfter a second down Drew Allar pass to Trey Wallace was called a catch on the field but then overturned to incomplete, Allar’s third down pass toward Tyler Warren was incomplete. The crowd wanted a flag to fly for either DPI or holding, but nothing was called. And then Riley Thompson hits just a short punt. OSU takes over at its own 42 up 14-10 with 10:34 to go in the half.
Questionable personal foul extends Buckeyes latest drive, leads to score and first OSU lead
11/2/2024, 1:00:19 PMTouchdown, Ohio State: Howard to Inniss for six. The personal foul that extended the drive on Elliot Washington II for stepping over Carnell Tate (see it below) led to the first Buckeyes lead. It’s 14-10 with 11:54 to go in the first half. Ohio State is getting way too many guys open in space and then using its speed to take advantage of the Lions’ miscues.
First quarter is in the books
11/2/2024, 12:50:41 PMEnd of the first quarter: Penn State 10, Ohio State 7. Third and 2 for the Buckeyes at their own 37 to start the second quarter. OSU has an 87-74 yards advantage.
Latest Lions drive ends with a punt
11/2/2024, 12:47:47 PMPenn State wanted a defensive holding call on Ohio State’s Igbinosun but the flag didn’t fly and he knocked Drew Allar’s third down pass away from Liam Clifford. Penn State punted, OSU called for holding, meaning it will start at its own 19 with :36 left in the first quarter. Receiver separation is a big issue for the Lions so far.
Buckeyes pull back within a score
11/2/2024, 12:41:27 PMNice answer for Ohio State, who popped off a couple of big runs to get into Penn State territory before Chip Kelly picked the perfect play for Will Howard to find a wide-open Egbuka for six. He came across the field and no Nittany Lion defender picked him up, leading to an easy 25-yard scoring strike to cap a 74-yard drive. PSU 10, OSU 7 with 1:59 left in the first quarter.
Pick six for Penn State extends the lead
11/2/2024, 12:31:13 PMZion Tracy just jumped a route and intercepted Will Howard’s third down pass and raced to the end zone to extend the Penn State lead to 10-0. It was a terribly ill-advised throw by Howard, as he looked right at his receiver from the snap and Tracy read his eyes the whole way. You can see for yourself below.
Long Penn State drive ends with a field goal, 3-0 lead
11/2/2024, 12:23:02 PMRyan Barker’s field goal is good. Penn State 3, Ohio State 0 with 6:54 left in the first quarter. Lions marched to the OSU 12, lost five yards on a penalty, gained five after, and threw an incompletion on third down. Some will question if Andy Kotelnicki got too cute with the ‘Pribula package’ as it led to the penalty for an illegal man down field. Opening drive: 14 plays, 61 yards, eight minutes.
We are underway at Beaver Stadium
11/2/2024, 12:11:25 PMNicholas Singleton returned the opening kickoff to the PSU 27. The Lions take over there.

11/2/2024, 12:05:51 PMThe coin toss is coming up next. KJ Winston Jr., who is dealing with a long-term injury, is here and one of the game captains. He’s walking out to midfield with a brace on his right knee.

Warmups are complete
11/2/2024, 11:43:56 AMNolan Rucci took the first team reps at right tackle. Anthony Donkon warmed up but it looks like he may not give it a go, or if he does, it will be a rotation starting with the first-year Nittany Lion. Dani Dennis-Sutton warmed up too but it’s hard to say what his full status is. We expect him to play but he may be on a rep count. Drew Allar looks great for Penn State and is good to go.
Penn State picks up a pregame commitment
11/2/2024, 11:45:44 AMThe new Nittany Lion has not yet made his decision public. But James Franklin’s usual ‘We Are..Better’ tweet to signal a commitment went out about 30 minutes before kickoff.
Penn State-Ohio State availability report
11/2/2024, 10:26:47 AMFor Penn State, running back Quinton Martin Jr., receiver Kaden Saunders, safety KJ Winston Jr., running back Cam Wallace, linebackers Keon Wylie, defensive end Zuriah Fisher, and tight end Andrew Rappleyea are OUT. Right tackle Anthony Donkoh and defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton are questionable.
Lions quarterback Drew Allar is not on the report. So, he’s good to go. Dennis-Sutton and Donkoh will test things out in pregame warmups. A decision will be made after those.
For Ohio State, left tackle Zen Michalski is OUT. It means the Buckeyes will likely slide starting right guard Donovan Jackson to tackle and bring second-year Buckeye Luke Montgomery in at guard. Tight end Will Kacmarek is also OUT.
In better news for the Buckeyes, starting safety Lathan Ransom is back today after missing last week’s game.
