Recap: Penn State-Rutgers score, notes, and more from SHI Stadium
Piscataway, N.J. — No. 11 Penn State is at SHI Stadium today to take on Rutgers. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. on Big Ten Network. This post will serve as your home for live updates and coverage from the press box as the Lions and Scarlet Knights meet in both teams’ penultimate regular season game.
“I think what you’re looking at is what they are,” Rutgers coach Greg Schiano said earlier this week.
“They’re a very good team,” Scarlet Knights coach Greg Schiano said this week. “It’s not just defense, it’s all three phases. “Certainly, defensively, they played extremely well last week. Suffocating. They can cover. They play a lot of man or match-up, which turns into man once the routes declare. I think the thing they’re doing the best, they’re second in the Big Ten in sacks, only to Michigan by one. So, they’re getting after the passer. Pass coverage and pass rush usually go hand in hand. So, they’re doing both very well.”
Added head coach James Franklin on the Penn State-Rutgers matchup:
“Coach Schiano, obviously there is history with Coach Schiano. Got a ton of respect for him. Watch him on tape. Their team plays really hard. Got 16 years of coaching experience at the college and NFL levels, and obviously now at Rutgers, was at Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Was also at Rutgers from 2001 to ’11, and also had been on the staff here at Penn State.
“So there is some history there.”

Lions-Scarlet Knights second quarter updates
5:22 — Halftime: Penn State 28, Rutgers 10 at halftime. Lions have a 181-83 yards advantage. It was a weird opening 30 minutes, but the visitors like where they stand.
5:14 — Touchdown, Penn State: Sean Clifford just ran straight up the middle for a 14-yard touchdown. Penn State 28, Rutgers 10 with 1:03 left in the first half. It has been FAR from a pretty game so far for the Lions. But, they’ve made fewer mistakes than the Scarlet Knights and have made them hurt more.
4:58 — Touchdown Penn State: The Lions broke out of their ‘T formation,’ and it led to Sean Clifford finding a wide-open Tyler Warren across the middle for six. The Lions now lead 21-10 with 6:11 left in the first half.
4:37 — This game is nuts. Rutgers has the ball back after Nicholas Singleton fumbled on a 1st and 10 carry. Scarlet Knights take over at the PSU 24.

Penn State-Rutgers first quarter updates
4:32 — After a nearly hour-long first quarter, Penn State leads Rutgers 14-10 despite crossing midfield only once on offense. Lions have special teams and defensive touchdowns.
4:29 — After review, the ruling of a touchdown stands. Dominic DeLuca forced the fumble (Marquis Wilson was there as well) and Kobe King took it in for six. It’s 14-10 Nittany Lions with 50 seconds to go in the half.
4:07 — Touchdown, Rutgers: After the big kickoff return, the Lions put up little resistance as the Scarlet Knights march in quickly with a scoring pass. The home side is back on top and the under is suddenly in peril. Wimsatt to Jones on the four-star touchdown pass.
4:00 — A strong Rutgers drive ended in Penn State territory. Then, the Scarlet Knights booted a 42-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead midway through the first quarter. But, the Lions answer right back, as Nicholas Singleton just took a kickoff 100 yards to the end zone for a score. The seas parted, and the true freshman stormed right up the middle to paydirt. Lions lead 7-3.
3:42 — Penn State goes three and out after losing the toss and being forced to receive.
Lions-Scarlet Knights pregame updates
3:38 — Rutgers won the toss and deferred. Penn State will receive to start this one.
3:37 — Penn State has taken the field to a mixture of boos and cheers. Plenty of Lions fans on hand but it’s definitely not a sellout crowd despite being announced as such.
3:09 — Warmups are over. Looks like it might be Drew Shelton and Bryce Effner at left and right tackle, respectively, to start, even those Wallace is healthy.
2:51 — Curtis Jacobs is in uniform and looks like a go today. Caedan Wallace is also going through warmups and looks to be set to return to his right tackle role. We don’t see Olu Fashanu, and that’s because he’s not on the travel roster.
2:45 — Cornerback Joey Porter Jr., receiver Parker Washington, and running back Keyvone Lee did not travel with the Lions today. Mitchell Tinsley, Kaden Saunders, and KeAndre Lambert-Smith are all fielding punts as the Lions will also need to replace Washington in his returner role, as well. Linebacker Curtis Jacobs is warming up, however. The linemen are not on the field yet, so no news there at this time.
