The Nittany Lions and Bruins both entered the day with key injury questions. For UCLA, the status of quarterback Ethan Garbers was squarely in the spotlight. Penn State, meanwhile, was unsure about the status of a number of players. Both teams arrived at the stadium around 10 a.m. ET, which is the same time each released their pregame availability report. Garbers is questionable but won’t play. Justyn Martin will start. For Penn State, Nick Singleton is questionable but will play and punt returner Kaden Saunders is out.

The BWI staff will have new updates once team warmups begin around 11 a.m. Then, you’ll find the latest on the Lions-Bruins matchup below.

“We were better on third down. In the first quarter, we were 0 for 2 on third down and weren’t able to get enough plays to stay on the field, and same with our defense,” James Franklin told the Penn State Sports Network. “I’m really proud of [Liam Clifford]. He’s a guy who’s done everything right here.”

Lions extend their lead before the half

Tyler Warren caught a five-yard touchdown toss from Drew Allar to put the Lions up 14-3 with 20 seconds left in the first half. It was a nifty drive for Penn State. It covered 75 yards in eight plays. Allar had big completions to Liam Clifford, Julian Fleming, and Trey Wallace to move the home team down the field.

Two minute warning time

Penn State and UCLA hit the two minute timeout mark of the first half at 1:18 p.m. ET. The Lions have 3rd and 4 at their own 31 coming out of the stoppage.

UCLA gets on the board

A busted Penn State coverage allowed Martyn to hit TJ Harden for a 53-yard catch and run to put UCLA into a goal to go situation. The Lions’ defense held up from there, leading to a 25-yard Bruins field goal, which was good. PSU 7, UCLA 3 late in the first half.

Penn State earns its first lead

Penn State capped a 16-play, 82-yard drive with a one-yard Drew Allar touchdown rush. Ryan Barker’s extra point is good. It’s 7-0 PSU with 6:40 left in the first half. Impressive drive for the Lions after a slow start.

Vega Ioane delivers viral block on Lions’ latest drive

Check this out, Penn State fans. Andy Kotelnicki put lineman Vega Ioane in motion. He then crushed a UCLA lineman.

Penn State 0, UCLA 0 after one

Penn State did not have the start it desired. The Lions defense forced a turnover on downs deep in its own end and forced a punt. On offense, UCLA outgained PSU 72-28 over the first 15 minutes. PSu starts the second quarter with 2nd and 3 at its own 25.

Penn State dials in defense, Donkoh update

Penn State right tackle Anthony Donkoh is walking around with his uniform and pads off moving his right arm in a circling motion. May have popped his shoulder out. On the field, UCLA is about to punt. It converted a 3rd and 11 but nothing more. Tony Rojas made a great play to force the punt as you can see below. Jake Spencer fields the punt. Lions take over at their own 18 late in the first quarter.

Lions sluggish start continues

Penn State moved the ball some on its second drive but ultimately punted. Right tackle Anthony Donkoh was hurt on a third down play that ended in a sack and thus a punt. Drew Allar is so far not sharp this afternoon. UCLA takes over at its own 25 with 4:02 left in the first quarter.

First UCLA drive stalls in Penn State territory

UCLA looked better on offense during its first series than Penn State did. Martin marched the Bruins into PSU territory with a fourth down conversion. After a targeting call on Zakee Wheatley was overturned, UCLA had 4th and 1 at the PSU 23, and Zakee Wheatley stuffed TJ Harden to force a turnover on down. The Lions get it back with 7:05 left in the first quarter. They are at their own 24.

Justyn Martin starts for UCLA

Justyn Martin starts at quarterback for UCLA. He replaces injured starter Ethan Garbers, who traveled and warmed up but is not healthy enough to play.

UCLA win the toss and defers, Lions go three and out

Penn State will get the ball first here at Beaver Stadium and the game is underway. Quinton Martin Jr., the freshman running back, was the kick returner. It marks his first return of the year and second game. Lions start at their own 27. Penn State goes three and out on its first drive. Drew Allar’s second down pass was low to Julian Fleming and incomplete and Omari Evans didn’t make the line to gain on third down.

UCLA at Penn State: Game time and details

Penn State is 2-4 all-time against UCLA. That surprised Franklin and, quite frankly, this reporter as well. All six games were played between 1963 and 1968, a period that included a crossover from Rip Engle to Joe Paterno. The Lions had winning seasons in four of those six years but were also 5-5 twice, partially because of losses to UCLA.

At any rate, here are the details for this year’s matchup:

Time: Noon ET
Date: Saturday, Oct. 5
Location: Beaver Stadium in State College, Pa.
Weather: A beautiful day is on tap. Here’s the latest forecast: “Sunny skies. High 71F. Winds light and variable.”
The line: Penn State is a 27.5-point favorite.
Over/under: 46.5 points

How to watch, stream Lions-Bruins

Penn State will appear on FOX for the first time this season. It was last on the network’s airwaves when it beat West Virginia in Week 1. The network’s live pregame show is also broadcasting from State College this week. It is positioned just outside of the Bryce Jordan Center between it and Beaver Stadium.

As for once the game begins, the top FOX team of Gus Johnson (play-by-play), Joel Klatt (color commentator), and Jenny Taft (sideline reporter) will be on the call.
