8:08 p.m. — Coverage bust for Penn State leads to West Virginia’s first chunk play. Greene to Devin Carter, who was wide open, to set up first and 10 at the Nittany Lions 11.

8:01 p.m. — Drew Allar nearly threw an interception after his pass was batted at the line of scrimmage. It fell to the grass, however, but Penn State will punt for the first time.

7:47 p.m. — Touchdown, Penn State: Drew Allar to KeAndre Lambert-Smith. The Nittany Lions are on the board less than five minutes into this matchup with West Virginia. It was a 72-yard scoring strike. PSU leads WVU 7-0 with 10:13 left in the first quarter.

7:45 p.m. — West Virginia picked up one first down but that was it. Penn State’s first drive starts at its own six.

7:38 p.m. — Gabe Nwosu kicks off for Penn State. It is a booming touchback. And we are underway at Beaver Stadium.

Penn State-West Virginia pregame updates

7:35 p.m. — Penn State wins the toss and will defer to the second half. It will kick off to West Virginia to open the 2023 season.

7:33 p.m. — We have press box rocking action before kickoff as fireworks fly and Penn State takes the field. Kickoff is moments away on NBC.

7:24 p.m. — Tonight’s referee is Mark Kluczynski. He is from the Big Ten conference.

7:23 p.m. — National anthem is in the books. We are about 13 minutes from kickoff.

7:11 p.m. — Surprise! Drew Allar has finally been named the starting quarterback.

7:08 p.m. — PSU will start Riley Thompson at punter and Sander Sahaydak at kicker. Zane Durant starts at defensive tackle beside Hakeem Beamon. Liam Clifford wins the third receiver job, but many will play.

7:03 p.m. — Omari Evans is warming up with the receivers despite being listed as questionable. Should be a go

6:15 p.m. — Early warmups are underway.

5:45 p.m. — The Nittany Lions’ mandated Big Ten availability report is out. Key names who won’t play tonight include defensive tackle Coziah Izzard, cornerback Daequan Hardy, and defensive end Amin Vanover. Receiver Omari Evans is also questionable. The full report is here.

5:30 p.m. — Both teams have arrived here at Beaver Stadium. The Lions rolled in moments ago. James Franklin and Neal Brown meet for the first time as head coaches tonight. The home team owns a 48-9-2 all-time advantage in the series. It is the 60th meeting between the programs, but first since 1992. The spread marks another year where the Lions are a double-digit favorite in their home opener. Must years, though, they face a Group of Five team. This year, it’s a Power Five foe. But, West Virginia is predicted to finish last in the Big 12, hence the big number.
