Recap: Penn State wrestling has five third place finishers out of seven in medal round of the NCAA Championships

PHILADELPHIA — Penn State was nearly perfect in the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships. Seven Penn State wrestlers were alive to finish as high as third. Five of them did. One finished fifth. And one medically defaulted to seventh.

The Lions’ five third place finishers are Luke Lilledahl, who pinned Purdue’s Matt Ramos at 125 pounds, Beau Bartlett, who recorded his 100th and final career victory with a major decision over Penn’s CJ Composto at 141, Shayne Van Ness, who beat Ohio State’s Dylan D’Emilio by major decision, 15-4, art 149 pounds, Tyler Kasak, who beat Northwestern’s Trevor Chumbley by major decision at 157 pounds, and Levi Haines, who beat Iowa’s Patrick Kennedy 11-3 at 174 pounds.

Braeden Davis finished fifth at 133 after pinning Connor McGonagle of Virginia Tech. And, heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet had to medically forfeit both his matches to ultimately finish sixth.

Penn State has clinched the NCAA team championship. It’s the Lions’ fourth consecutive title and 12th in the last 14 tournaments. Six Nittany Lions continue to wrestle for placement in this fifth session. The seventh, heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet, has medically defaulted to sixth place.

Five Nittany Lions will wrestle for third.

Freshman Luke Lilledahl beat Virginia Tech’s Eddie Ventresca by decision, 4-1, in sudden victory to clinch a spot in the third place match at 125 pounds. He will face Matt Ramos of Purdue.

Sophomore Braeden Davis will wrestle for fifth at 133 pounds. He dropped his consolation semifinal to Wisconsin’s Zan Fuggit, 8-5. The Nittany Lion will face Connor McGonagle of Virginia Tech.

Senior Beau Bartlett is going for third at 141 pounds after beating Navy’s Josh Koderhandt 11-6 in sudden victory. He will face CJ Composoto of Penn, who he beat in the quarterfinals.

At 149 pounds, Shayne Van Ness, who clinched the team title with a first period pin of Oregon State’s Ethan Stiles, will now go for third opposite Dylan D’Emilio of Ohio State.

Sophomore Tyler Kasak is in the third place match at 157 pounds. He got there by beating Cornell’s Meyer Shapiro by fall in 4:19. He’ll face Northwerstern’s Trevor Chumbley.

Junior Levi Haines is in the third place match at 174 pounds. He beat Cornell’s Simon Ruiz, 4-1.

Penn State sophomore Tyler Kasak will go for third at 157 pounds later today. He beat Cornell’s Meyer Shapiro 4-2 in a consolation semifinal.

Penn State 285-pound wrestler Greg Kerkvliet will medically default out of the NCAA Championships. He has a knee injury. “The knee is not in good shape,” Jeff Byers says on the PSU Sports Network.

The official brackets already reflect the Nittany Lions’ decision. He’ll finish sixth.
