Recap: Penn State wrestling racks up four pins, five tech falls, in 50-3 win over American

Penn State wrestling secured four pins and five takedowns en route to winning nine of 10 bouts in a 50-3 blowout over American in a non-conference dual meet at Rec Hall. Head coach Cael Sanderson’s side only dropped one match, as backup Kyison Garcia, who filled in for starter Braeden Davis, lost a 9-7 decision to Raymond Lopez at 133 pounds. Penn State notched a 35-2 takedowns edge and secured its ninth undefeated season in the last 10 years. Find a full recap of the match below.

Mitchell Mesenbrink kicks off the second half with a victory

To kick off the second half of tonight’s dual meet, Penn State 165-pound starter Mitchell Mesenbrink extended his nation-leading technical fall streak by stopping American’s Kaden Milheim 19-2 in 5:20. Penn State leads American 26-3 after six matches. Mesenbrink now has 15 technical falls on the year and it’s the Lions’ fifth of the night.

Van Ness picks up another tech fall for Penn State

Shayne Van Ness picked up two takedowns and four late nearfall points for a 10-1 lead over Gage Owen after one. The Nittany Lion went on to win by technical fall, 15-3, in 5:51. Penn State leads American 15-3 after four matches, three of which have ended by technical fall.

Bartlett ends his career at Rec Hall with a victory

Beau Bartlett racked up six first period takedowns in his 141-pound match opposite American’s Elijah White en route to an 18-5 first period lead. He then scored a quick second period takedown for a 21-5 technical fall in just 3:19. Penn State now leads American 10-3 after three matches.

American gets on the board at 133

After a scoreless first period, Raymond Lopez escaped early in the second for a 1-0 lead. But Garcia shot in shortly there after for a takedown on the edge for a 3-1 lead with a minute left in the second period. Lopez escaped to 3-2 and at the end of a strong scramble, Lopez scored a takedown at the buzzer to make it 5-3 in favor of the American wrestler after five minutes. Garcia escaped to 5-4 early in the third. He then shot in and secured a takedown to take a 7-5 lead midway through the third period. The Eagles then escaped to 7-6. Lopez later scored a takedown with 10 seconds left to win, 9-7. Penn State leads American 5-3 after 133.

Lilledahl scores a tech fall

Luke Lilledahl scored a fast takedown, becoming of his ‘Lightning Luke’ name early in the first period. He then scored two more first period takedowns after giving up two escapes, but not before gathering 1:49 in riding time for a 9-2 lead after one. The freshman built a 17-3 lead after two. A quick takedown in the third led to a 20-3 technical fall for Luke Lilledahl over Coen Bainey at 5:11. Penn State leads American 5-0 after 125.
