Where does the Penn State Class of 2023 stand entering the day?
Penn State enters Monday with 16 Class of 2023 commitments. The only commitment of the month so far came from Venice, Fla., four-star corner Elliot Washington. He flipped from Alabama back on Friday.
As for the completion of the class, it currently features seven players on offense. However, none of them are running backs.
Montgomery has long been one of the program’s top targets. He was previously joined on that list by Treyaun Webb, but the four-star from IMG Academy committed to in-state Florida last week. So, that leaves Montomgery as the Lions’ top target on the board at the start of the day.
Who are the contenders for Montgomery?
Twenty-four programs offered Montgomery over the course of his recruitment. The senior never released a list of top schools. But, it became clear that Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Boston College were his favorite suitors. That’s because he took official visits to all three programs.

The Hokies had the first crack at a 48-hour all-expenses-paid trip. They hosted him on June 10 before the Lions did on June 17. The Eagles had the last crack on June 24, and then Montgomery set his decison date about two weeks later.
What he has said about Penn State
Montgomery caught up with BWI recruiting expert Ryan Snyder following his official visit.
“Something that stood out to me at Penn State was the strong connection between the players and the coaches,” Montgomery said. “They are very close. Another thing that stood out to me was that Coach [Ju’Juan] Seider made me feel like I was at home. I was very comfortable talking about anything with him and the rest of the staff.”
Who is favored in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine?
Penn State is a 95.3 percent favorite to land Montgomery heading into decision day. Both Virginia Tech and Boston College have less than a two percent chance to earn the running back’s commitment, according to the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. The Lions’ lead is powered by both proximity and an expert pick from BWI’s Ryan Snyder.
Final word
Penn State has pushed hard for Montgomery for months. Its hard work should be rewarded on Monday, much to the excitement of Lions fans.
