Sugar Land, Tex., Fort Bend Christian Academy edge Max Granville shocked the recruiting world on Thursday. Previously one of the highest-rated verbal commitments in the Penn State Class of 2025, the four-star announced that he is reclassifying to the Class of 2024. On the field, it means the Nittany Lions are getting a talented player into their program much sooner than expected. Originally, Granville was to arrive next January. Instead, as the program also announced Thursday afternoon, he has already signed and will join the team for preseason camp, which starts next week.

“Thank you FBCA for three great years, forever grateful,” Granville wrote on Twitter. “Excited for a new chapter at Penn State!”

Granville, who stands 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, is in rare air when it comes to Penn State early enrollees. By our tracking, the only similar situation in recent — or even not recent — memory is when defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg left Iowa Western Community College in the summer of 2021 to join the Lions shortly before preseason camp began. There are differences, of course, as van den Berg already completed a year at the junior college while Granville finished high school following his junior year.

“This was always Max’s decision, but in terms of development, if the goal is to keep getting better, from my perspective, it was like a no-brainer,” Max Granville’s father, Billy Granville, told BWI.

Lions jump Michigan in On3 Industry Team Rankings for the Class of 2024

Granville’s decision comes with an extra benefit for Penn State. Getting him in the weight and nutrition program, not to mention summer camp and then his first college semester, is obviously the biggest win. The second triumph is that now no other school closer to home can flip him as his recruiting process is officially complete. Last but not least on the list of victories is this: The Lions jumped Michigan for No. 15 in the On3 Industry Rankings for the Class of 2024. At 2:15 p.m. ET, head coach James Franklin’s program sat at No. 16 with 91.231 points while the Wolverines sat at No. 15 with 91.313. After Granville was moved to the Class of 2024, however, a fresh rankings update sees PSU with 91.389 points, hence the leapfrog of the fellow Big Ten program.
