Penn State news, notes, and updates for April 6 include Mike Yurcich on Drew Allar’s strengths, plus a portal win for the Lions, and more.
It’s time to dive into Thursday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.
Penn State tweets of the day
We start with the transfer portal. Penn State went into it on Wednesday night to land Williamsport, Pa., native and former Minnesota running back Trey Potts. He has three years of eligibility remaining thanks to the extra year provided to all athletes by the NCAA due to the coronavirus pandemic. A three-time All-Big Ten academic team selection, he stands 5-foot-10, 210-pounds and rushed 101 times for 471 yards and three touchdowns last season. He adds important depth and experience to position coach Ja’Juan Seider’s room.
Potts will arrive in State College later this year.
In other news, ESPN’s Heather Dinich was at Penn State this week to catch up with numerous members of the Nittany Lions program ahead of the 2023 season. One of them was third-year offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich. He broke down the strengths of expected first-team quarterback Drew Allar.

“He makes some throws that will make you say wow,” Yurcich told Dinich. “He’s such a big body, but he can really maneuver his body well, so he’s hard to bring down … you need three arms on him, at least. He can stand in there, and he doesn’t need much space. He’s got really good vision. He keeps his eyes downfield incredibly well for a young guy.”
Allar has not yet been named the 2023 starter, of course. He continues to battle classmate Beau Pribula for the right to replace Sean Clifford.
