Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft sat down last week for an exclusive interview with Blue White Illustrated. Senior Editor Nate Bauer joins the show to discuss what they talked about and how he sees the first week under Kraft’s leadership after that conversation. They’ll also discuss the nuances of Penn State’s athletic model, the future of NIL, a timeline for events, and more.

Pat Kraft getting right to work

Host Thomas Frank Carr starts with Bauer’s overall impressions of Kraft during their conversation. Did Kraft match his demeanor in his opening press conference? What fascinating insight did he pick up from a follow-up conversation? From there, Bauer brings up his article at Blue White Illustrated about Kraft’s commitment to keeping Penn State’s full complement of sports and what needs to happen for that future to come true.

Bauer: On first day, Patrick Kraft takes stock of Penn State Athletics

They’ll also discuss how football fits into that picture and how Kraft can assist with the largest money-maker at Penn State while still having a broad athletic department.

Solving Penn State NIL issues “In a few weeks”?

They’ll also broach NIL with a similar frame of reference. Considering where Penn State is from a facilities standpoint, how can they also compete at NIL? Will focusing on all sports take away from football’s ability to compete? Also, can Penn State gain momentum if head coach Jame Franklin doesn’t have to be the leader in this conversation?

They’ll wrap up by discussing the future of athletics and if NIL has a long-term place in the conversation.

Penn State’s most explosive receivers over the last five seasons

Earlier this week, we looked at the most explosive runners over the last five seasons for Penn State Football in celebration of the Fourth of July. But unlike those photos you took of fireworks on your phone, we’ll look at this topic again. This time we’ll rank the five most explosive receivers of the last five seasons. These players provided that all-important explosive passing play that the Nittany Lions and head coach James Franklin desired for his Penn State offense.

We’ll rank these players based on their deep production in several metrics. Primarily, we’ll look at volume (total receptions and targets), yards and touchdowns, and yards per-route-run. Yards per route run is a metric of efficiency that considers the number of times a receiver runs a route versus the yards they produce. So a player running deep often but not getting the ball is less productive than one who makes something happen with his time on the field.

Finally, deep receptions according to PFF are passes targeted 20+ yards downfield.
