Penn State news, notes, and updates for Sept. 20 include a new name, image, and likeness deal for Nicholas Singleton plus Kirk Ferentz on if the 2021 PSU-Iowa game will provide any extra incentive for this year’s home team and more.

It’s time to dive into Wednesday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with a new NIL deal for Penn State sophomore Nicholas Singleton. The Lions’ running back is part of a star-studded class of athletes who have joined 7-Eleven’s new ‘Cleat Crew.’

“As part of their agreements, the athletes will team up with luxury designer The Shoe Surgeon to create their own individual pair of custom cleats that fans can win through weekly auctions,” On3’s Pete Nakos writes. “Terms of the contracts were not released.

“Proceeds from each sale of custom cleats will go to Children’s Miracle Network Hospital, a longtime partner of 7-Eleven. The auctions will coincide with the athlete’s signature matchup of the season.”

Singleton’s auction is set for Nov. 10-15 and will benefit Geisinger Janet Weis Children’s Hospital in Danville, Pa.

In other news, Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz was asked this on Tuesday: “There’s a bit of a sour taste in Penn State’s mouth after the 2021 game. There was a little bit of controversy about accusations of flopping. Obviously they lost their quarterback, lost the league, lost the game. Are you expecting a little bit extra juice out of them coming into a game like this?”

Here’s his response:

“Not really. I don’t know how many of their players were here in ’21. I don’t know how many of our guys were here either. And then probably, like me, not many of them remember much about it other than it was a tough game. We had to make a big play to really get back into it.

“And once you play the game, it’s usually pretty much like the rest, you move on to the next season, next game, I don’t think it’s a big game deal there.”

Quote of the day

“I visited Penn State for the first time in June and it was great. I spent the day there and I got to tour the gorgeous campus, see the stadium, look at the facilities and meet the coaches. The biggest highlight was probably the people. All were so welcoming to me and my family and that stood out. I got to spend time with Coach Mike Yurcich and Coach Skinny (Chris Mahon). They are great guys and Coach Skinny is my guy. Coach Yurcich is great too. He is such a smart coach and we had a great meeting up there.”
