Nick Singleton injury update: What's the status of the star Penn State running back?
STATE COLLEGE — Penn State star running back Nicholas Singleton did not finish Saturday’s 35-6 win over Washington on the Nittany Lions’ sideline. The junior’s last carry was a 9-yard gain with 9:44 to go in the game. It’s unclear when he exited the field for the locker room. But, something is clearly up with No. 10. James Franklin was asked about the situation during the postgame news conference.
“As you guys know, I don’t kind of get into those types of things,” he said. “You’ll find out when you come out to practice [Wednesday]. I don’t have a whole lot more. Typically, I get in [to the locker room] after this, shower. Everybody’s gone, shower. [Head trainer] Andy Mutnan is waiting for me. He goes through how we got out of the game, and what the injuries were. Typically, we don’t have a whole lot of information until the next morning. But as you can imagine, I don’t usually get into sharing that information with you guys, anyway, at this stage.”
Franklin is unlikely to have an update on Singleton’s status at his regular Monday news conference. He finished seven carries for 45 yards. He also had a kick return touchdown wiped off the board to start the second half due to a holding call on Luke Reynolds. With Singleton sidelined, Penn State junior Kaytron Allen handled most of the second-half workload. He carried 11 times after the break for 26 yards and a touchdown.
Freshman Corey Smith also made his Penn State debut. He ripped off a 78-yard run on the final drive of the day and finished with five carries for 95 yards. If Singleton misses any additional time, Allen would carry the load with help from Smith and freshman Quinton Martin Jr., who has played in three games this year but missed some time due to injury before returning to full health this weekend. Martin could be used one more time in the regular season while still preserving a year of eligibility.

Penn State demolished Washington on Saturday
The Nittany Lions were better in the first half compared to the second. But, they still dominated throughout. Penn State earned a 486-193 yards advantage. It held Washington to just 74 rushing yards. And, the home team was 10 of 13 on third down, 5 for 5 in the red zone with four touchdowns, and won the explosive play and sack battles despite tying the turnover battle and losing the penalty one. It was a quality effort coming off the first loss of the year and sets the Lions up to roll down the home stretch of the regular season.
